this has been done many times, but I don't see it here. let have fun *yes*

your favorite best recordings, epic standards, industry benchmark works for production and engineering.
I know which ones I like best, but let me start with an open table and see what titles and names pop up

do you mean tools or actual records?

If you mean actual records, i dont think anyone has ever got a sound a good as the dudes in the 70's especially Motown and a lot of James Brown stuff. Id chuck Pet sounds in the mix as one of the best engineered/mixed records ever...

if your talking about plug-ins etc...

i have no opinion on such a dead subject lol...

hi remix, yeah I was thinking of actual recordings. and you have a point there about the 70's and Motown. hi-fi was the thing, before there was digital people took their sound quality very seriously. I have a friend whos into old vinyl, and some of the old records he has are remarkable mixes

Something newer that kinda gave me a wow moment. Nice example of modern creative production and engineering imo.
The WOW moment comes at about 3:10 . Just hear it from beginning though, because only then the trick will have the greatest effect. Enjoy

    slightly off topic ..

who'uda thunk this guy in the John 3:16 shirt

would raise a stick girl who would go on to be diddling herself
on the hood of a car onstage for fun and profit...

and people would actually "buy" the music.. :wow:

don questo thank you, I quite enjoyed that. yeah I was hoping to see some non-mainstream. he really used the amount of sound content well.
it reminds me of a movie I saw (I wish I could recall it here), during a sad part in the movie the music composer went so minimal of content that it matched the movie. matching the dark desert scene and the sad story, the soundscape went so minimal as to almost be dead air.

which brings up movies, videos and games genres.
Super Mario 8-bit sound would fit in benchmark works.

and lol @ Herr, you got me on that one too :) I get it

the more and more I learn about music, which has been my whole life, the more relevant studying the top works becomes. when learning about mixing, there we are studying them. when picking out a set of monitors or setting up an environment, and take our favorite CDs with us. the other day I heard some work by one of our staff/moderator and I was amazed at the depth of the sound field . I always find good work interesting

+1 for brian wilson.. some of the later stuff like Surf's Up are amazing sonically as well as musically.. increadible as he is deaf in one ear...
    at the moment...
i also admire anything that thomas dolby does, esp his own work and the production for Prefab Sprout.
i also recommend "The Hissing of Summer Lawns" by Joni Mitchell, about as perfect a record as i have ever heard...
i've also been listening to some of quincy jones particularly the Dude LP and stuff like Brothers Johnson, Streetwave.. brilliant productions ...

A few modern recordings I like is: Dream Theater - Awake
    Queensryche - Promised Land
Porcupine Tree - In Abstentia (surround sound version is awesome)
    Megadeth - Youthenasia

They all sound very open and clear. Excellent production values. I think they were all recording ADD or AAD with SSL's except Porcupine Tree which is all Pro Tools.
