Eugene Shoemaker was a geologist and a founder of modern planetary science. He studied craters on Earth and Moon, and realized that they were created by asteroid impacts. Shoemaker was the geology principal investigator for Apollo missions, and he also helped to train the Apollo astronauts that went to the Moon. He himself was a candidate for an Apollo Moon flight but was disqualified after being diagnosed with Addison's disease. Later in life, he said, "Not going to the Moon and banging on it with my own hammer has been the biggest disappointment in life." Shoemaker spent much of his later years searching for undiscovered impact craters around the world. He died on July 18, 1997, in a car accident in Australia, where he was studying craters. In 1999, as a recognition for his scientific accomplishments, some of his ashes were carried to the Moon by the Lunar Prospector space probe. His final resting place is close to the lunar south pole, in the Shoemaker crater, named after him.
The Shoemaker's urn was inscribed with a quotation from Romeo and Juliet reading:
    "And, when he shall die
Take him and cut him out in little stars
And he will make the face of heaven so fine
That all the world will be in love with night
And pay no worship to the garish sun."

He is the only human buried on celestial body other than Earth. After his death, he finally got to go where he always wanted to be.

Big fan of Nightwish here. This other song is as long, complex and epic as it gets. Describes the suffering of the band leader (composer and keyboards) after the traumatic split with the first band's vocalyst and frontwoman. It was quite the drama both personally and publicly.

I put the incredible live version that improves the album one. Basically because of Floor Jansen, current vocalist and the same who sings in the above video. It's not the best NW song but vocally-wise her performance is beyond incredible. And live.

PS. BTW, previosly posted Pearl Jam's "Jeremy" is beyond awesome. Goosebumps guaranteed no matter how many thousands of times I heard it

The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald by Canada's late balladeer, Gordon Lightfoot.
He kept in touch with the families of the lost sailors for the rest of his life.

I'm going to throw a flag on A Day in the Life... great song and it does reference some factual news stories but I wouldn't say the song tells a story as such. :guru:

The "Scandal" was real. Like PizzaGate was real. The underlying events? lol. Who cares. No one ever wants the real story anyway. In one interview around the time, Steve Albini said something like " it's none of your business what we sing about anyway" when asked about some lyrics in one of these:

Ignoring a treaty formed in WWI, Hitler sends his gargantuan battleship on a top secret mission to the Atlantic. Bismarck, named after Otto von Bismarck, Germany’s first Chancellor, was commissioned in 1940 and sank in May 1941 following a battle with the British Royal Navy.

Sabaton is not my favorite band but I guess their all songs tell about a historical event.

Probably not the first singer you would think of but this was quite epic in its own way especially for the subject material and when it came out.

The entire album is full of stories and there's also a trilogy of songs (upon the boiling sea 1-3)

It's one of the few albums I enjoy from the beginning to the end without skipping.
