Just now I posted a message and a moderator accused me of posting a warez, and promptly "award" me with a warning

However, the software package that I had linked to was more of an abandonware than a warez

The one page that I can find regarding that software is at http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/aug98/articles/hyperprism.html

And tracing the producer of the software package, I end up at this joint - http://www.unityaudio.co.uk/

http://www.unityaudio.co.uk/ has no mention of the software package that I linked to, I even did a "search" on the site and couldn't find anything

That software package was designed for Windows 95, a very old software package - and most probably the vendor may have changed hand or has stopped selling that software

What I want to know is this - how to differentiate an abandonware from a warez ?

    Is "discontinued" software the same?
And the same with "no longer supported" ?

Well if you're unsure just ask your question without providing a link as I already told you that was unnecessary because it had nothing to do with what you wanted to know. This usually isn't a problem because there haven't been any incidents here, really I think this might be the first. You need to understand that I don't have a list of discontinued software from 15 years ago and it's present status as to whether it's still for sale or freeware. Instead of arguing you could have just checked a few of those links on Google you've been telling me about and discovered that it's now freeware...like I just did. I saw a few sites with posts from a few years ago where someone was looking to buy them but then I found a trusted site where it's available as freeware (since a few years back) so I'm going with the latter in my decision to remove your warning. However now I have wasted around 30 minutes of my day researching as to whether this is free or not which is something you should have been doing and simply provided a link to one of these sites when I first commented on your other thread and issued a warning. However instead you chose to waste your time, my time, everyone's time and energy simply because you made a big deal instead of providing the one quick thing that would have solved the problem in 2 seconds...a link to a site where it says freeware. There are ways to go about things and this wasn't it. *no*

Instead of starting a new thread you could have just sent the mods or even saint a pm with any queries you may have :dunno:

I actually think the download from that site is a trial version and I don't know if the link you were sharing was trial or the full version but I'll leave the warning removed since it's such a grey area. However please try to work on your problem solving skills.

If anyone knows if this still costs money or is now free please let me know.

why posting software for windows 95 anyway? it s already enough lame having people who still rant about windows xp and how good it is in 2013,getting out of the top hat software dated back to when fred flintstone was a child would actually be too much

Hey I still use XP, so does SineWave and a few other members here. It's a good operating system and though I will probably be making the switch to something newer when I do a new build I like it. For my dual core it will run much better than anything new and I won't have compatibility issues with some of my plug-ins. However I do agree that 1998 plug-ins better do some amazing shit if I'm downloading them...in 2013. :wow:

OK...as the PkugIns Company doesnt exist any longer..here is their archived webpage for the mentioned PlugIn Pack. And as you can see this pack was no freeware!

Thanks Lukehh for that information, apparently I was correct when I issued that warning. I think what I came across was the trial version as freeware. The weird thing is on their website if you click download these packs are listed as free software and they can't mean demo because that is another link. What I mean is that on the page you linked to it says it costs money but then when I go to the download section and free software it's listed. :dunno:

Simple Minds is actually a great band that is still playing today, their last album Graffiti Soul was really good.

Not quite correct. When you visit the Hyperprism Pack features...
    http://web.archive.org/web/20031022004123/http://www.arboretum.com/products/plugins/hyp_dx_feat.html

and compare it to the freeware package:
    http://web.archive.org/web/20040815020822/http://www.arboretum.com/download/freeware_directx.html

you can see the free package contain only a few full functional plugins out of the full package..the others are included as demo versions.

Nice thanks for straightening out that last mystery, I really appreciate it. Hopefully we don't have other members planning on dropping in asking about plug-ins from the 90s from companies that no longer exist.
