don't beat me, but I think all this shit was made by antivirus companies in collaboration with CIA/NSA/russian FSB (what probably hacked american election system and tried to hack french election system) or something like this. This guys and girls are fucking bastards

This is of course assuming that the computer isn't locked (meaning that there are other possible interaction with the pc besides paying).

Well TBH I can't remember but I know for sure that win10 is doing that. My computer is in the bedroom and once my wife woke up at 3am because of this!

We know that the original ransomware originated from a leaked NSA tool. That is a fact. However your assertions about the FSB and the Russians are completely unfounded. Until this date there is absolutely no evidence of Russian involvement.

1 or 2 years salary in some places.. ...and that's probably not all they are getting...
some companies would probably arrange a "silent" payoff...

    @Herr Durr
You are right, I miscalculated that.
Many companies would probably not advertise that they were blackmailed.

You're totally right but it won't help to replace one monopoly by another or by an oligopoly.
The problem that, if all people try to use the same architecture there is risen a monoculture. We would need A LOT of very differently built OSes.
The status quo is, that windows is so widely spread that a malware programmer, lazy as the rest of us, only needs to find a vulnerability in ONE OS and then is able to infect millions of computers.
The same would be true, if almost all computers on the world would be run with Unix derivatives.
And open source wouldn't be the remedy. Remember the Open SSL vulenrability some years ago?
Furthermore I would suspet opensource programmers to implement backdoors in the OSses. Just as a proof of concept. SO, possibly, Linux etc. have backdoors by design? Or is there an authority that proves, there is no vulnerable code in Linux etc. or even backdoors.

I think, we, the users, have to be careful with what we do.

Me, personally, I am doing very intensive backups. Daily, weekly, monthly. of my machines on changing harddrives. If there is a problem, I go back as much as I have to. This only needs some external USB disks.
I do the Windows security updates but I do not use Antivirus Software for more the 10 years now. Antivirus Software is Malware itself :)
Haven't had any problems this way. And it's almost for free.

True but the cybercriminal culture there is thriving and they were affected the most.

I'm not saying it was specifically Russia or Russian hackers. Objectively speaking, this could just as easily have been an outsourced move by Microsoft to finally force individuals and industries still on XP over to 10.

Plus, you have to look at where this information is coming from. It could easily have been manufactured by corporate powers to raise the need for anti-virus and crap we don't actually need.

Google and Firefox open source programmers said, one puts his computers at risk by INSTALLING anti virus software.
And that'ts true. We must avoid any software that is able to control our machines that deeply. Nobody knows, wich new vulnerabilities are introduced by A/V software willful or unintended. The OS (Win/Max/iX) itself is risky enough ;)
