The click wheel - period. You clearly are accusing things you never used...
Sorry but your allegations are hillarious.
First of all, Apple holds over 300.000 patents. That is some record for a company with no invention or innovation don't you think so ? And dude, i know my history, i was there when Apple brought the mouse and windows environment to the public. Ok, Jobs stole the idea from the researchers & Wozniak implemented it. But it worked and it changed the entire computing world. I can write a whole 10000 words essay of the things Apple brought in the consumer and pro computing world.
Also, i find your posts about "wannabe leftists" and demands like "just stop it" offensive and i am being polite. You are relatively new here, if you got something to say, please keep it civil.
    Cheers

The extent of this thread is becoming out of control a bit. I made the decision some time ago with which machine i will spend the next 2-3 Years possibly, an Imac 16 gb ram, SSD, i5 or i7 depends on budget and offer. End of the year this thing will be mine period.
There are many reasons i think it’s actually the right choice, and i won‘t say a Win or Hackintosh Computer can’t be a better alternative. I‘m not a tech guy, nor do i have time & patience, i be able to spend a few HOURS a WEEK so no need for getting too professional. Thx for all the contributions so far, no go on with the program. I always learn something here & there from what u guys bring 2 the table!

a clicking wheel is considered a technological innovation by your standards?
wow, I guess planet earth is actually turning into the planet of the apes.
Apple and i-crap users actually genetically separated themselves from mankind into a new species of monkeys.
bottom line: just because Apple wrote some patents doesn't mean they're useful for anything nor original

The click wheel was the selling point of the device. Also the tight integration. It is considered a user interface innovation from the majority of industrial design specialists. Ever heard of those ? Needless to say the sales of the device(s) speak for them. If you are unable to see the how and the why, that is your prob m8. But here, indulge yourself :

I love the "some patents" quote. Dude, what kind of "passion" drives you ? Because certainly is not sheer knowledge...
300k patents puts Apple in the top 10 companies worldwide, or near there anyway. And patent of course is the definition of original lol.
    Patent is:
"A government authority or licence conferring a right or title for a set period, especially the sole right to exclude others from making, using, or selling an invention".
And from Britannica : "Patent, a government grant to an inventor of the right to exclude others from making, using, or selling an invention, usually for a limited period".

PS: Of all the things in the world, finding myself defending the monster Apple has become is quite funny, but what's right is right.

Thing is, taskforce is NOT a fanboi if you bother to read or comprehend what he has been saying in this thread... and his links are not pure clickbaits. I was there too when all these things happened, from the OG mac to the IIfx/ci lines, through the power computing clones, through the intel chips, the iPods, iPads, apple music store, etc.... like it or not, and whether they "originated" the ideas or not, their patents and obviously widespread implementation and ubiquity have not been achieved by the competition in many areas, for better or worse, ... and apple single handedly (well almost), brought about copernican shifts in many industries, from music, movies and other media, the whole online commerce thing, the "store", and down the line.

I don't agree with all or a lot of what they do, but I can't deny their impact on all of our lives, and to do so is pretty myopic, I get the fact that many on here weren't born or of conscious ability to acknowledge events prior to apple and view things through the rear view mirror as "obvious".... but no, they weren't... or successfully brought to public consciousness...

I don't like what apple has become on many levels, and yeah, I still use them and other os's to some degree, but you can't have blinders on to their impact. It's just perpetuating a very tired trope.

    This maybe logic...
But my PC using Studio one had bigger processor and more ram then my 2017 imac im on now.
i never ever could have reached as many tracks, busses, instruments on my pc.
    never. [IMG]
yeah my organization is atrocious i'm aware lol
Im mixing it my self so.. GET OFF MY BACK! ;P lol
Some VST, VSTi all with 2-4 AU on each... some of the more heavily processed stuff have 8 Heavy plugs..
I love my mac i wont ever go back. this is from a Die hard PC'r for 20 years lol

realize OP was intending to buy a used one.
but Apple is Finally coming around to letting the user upgrade the parts wich is going to extended the life of macs even further.

When it comes down to it. PC has about a 1 year (if your lucky) span of being top of the market.
Macs sit, for years... Still viable.
Could you go out and buy a stock "Gaming PC" from 2017 and do what My mac can stock?
The converts will always know the truth..Theres just something about mac.
PC has its bonuses. I'd love to be able to gank everything off the sister site.
But i have spent at the minimum %80 more time on what i want to be doing rather then
fixing settings, re installing OS, or picking apart my PC for malware..

Totally depends on which generation. Overall i7's in laptops do out perform i5's using windows. The later generation of i5's out perform older i7's A big factor is using an SSD and as much ram as you can get your hands on. I would stongly recommend using an audio interface that uses asio drivers.

I don't use any Apple products anymore and I won't use Apple products even if they would be for free either.
BUT I had some and therefore I know myself where the problems are and can imagine why people leave Apple as customers.
What you do is using second-hand knowledge to judge about things you don't know anything about as you never got in touch with any Apple had- or software.
Why do you judge people out of your hearsay "knowledge"? You don't have any self-experienced knowledge, that is what you said and therefore you don't have any right to judge about apple users.
This is Nazi speak and Nazi ideas. They devide human beings in groups of genetic acceptable and non acceptable races and speak about some of them to be like animals. Is it this really what you mean?
In this thread you were'nt able to make a post without insults, may they be personal or global.
A 20 to 30 percent of our fellow members of AS are Apple users. Do you find it acceptable to insult that whole group - at least some hundereds - of members just because they once made the decision to buy Apple hard- or software?

You are playing with what is a 10 dollar chip. The funnier part is you do not notice. I am teasing you mate, but what i said is true. But hey, some people like to walk, some rides bikes, some ride cards, some ride ferraris. You gotta choose which one you wanna be:)
    @NeverenoghFun
My friend, i read your post, imho, it would be for the best, if your post swapped the word Mac where you talk about your computer with the word macOS. Because as stated many times before and is now common knowledge, since 2007 the Mac is a pc running a Unix based OS.
So, your whole assumption about the hardware is really about the software you work with and its behavior across the Windows and macOS platforms.
Anyway, its true macOS sometimes can be less consuming and a bit snappier, especially when compared to vanilla Windows 10, but since you can build a better Mac with Hackintosh, i don't see why spend the cash to Apple.
    All the best

Had good one & later on an ok interface back in time in the studio, actually only working on headphones & do a direct mixdown. Do not really notice any difference. Maybe its me, please teach me about interfaces, on a budget. I guess i can search in here and get somewhere. Thx for letting me know. I plug my headphone directly into mac, no amp, maybe its my weak setup

I was born a Windows lover. I got into the Apple eco-system with iOS and just a few years ago, after getting a job where I had to be certified ACiT/ACMT I really started using their desktop platform. Out of the box, it automatically did all the things I had to learn and configure my Windows machine to do. The funny thing is, they did them better because the process path to the kernel is shorter.
It took me years to realize that the rtpMIDI system I absolutely adored on my Windows PC was actually emulating a system that had been built into macs for over a decade now.
Core Audio is simply amazing. I can combine multiple audio devices, including iPhones and iPads and create an Aggregate audio device that lets all the applications I use see them as ONE audio interface and use their I/O simultaneously. All this with imperceptible lag.
@taskforce is right in that these machines are simply commercialized derivatives of various Linux distributions. They've taking cool features us nerds have been geeking over and stabilized, prettied up and integrated into their platform. AirDrop is awesome but you can configure an openSSH connection to do the same. The only difference is user effort and time taken. I believe this applies to practically every aspect of their OS.
I also agree that the price tag is elitist and at this point, verging on fascism.

@Retrolize77 I said a lot and didn't give you any advice. Get something with lots of USB and hopefully FireWire and Thunderbolt. I have a 17" 2011 MBP that I installed an SSD and 16GB RAM in and it runs like a champ. It has a AMD Radeon video card which I disabled for the internal as it's used exclusively for audio. This will make it run quieter, use less processing and if the internal ever does give out you can switch to the dedicated. This works the other way too.

I am a PC user, because that's what I can afford at the moment and I got tired of dealing with updating Hackintosh.
But I experienced both OS so I can tell you for sure that on the same computer, same Ableton project was barely hitting 30% of CPU usage on Mac while going 60-70% on Windows 10, giving a lot of disturbing artifacts. A project that went 60% on Mac was still playable without artifacts, while on Windows 10 was running out of CPU. Maybe Ableton is using resources differently depending on the OS, but that's my DAW of choice and that was my experience.

i did try some of their products and disliked from the first to the last touch actually.

I did not mean it in an offensive way whatsoever, I'm not a racist. I was a bit trolling (yeah sorry) + extremely sarcastic bout Apple users being so elitist and so full of themselves, they prob smell their own farts for joy.
I have no idea why ppl here are being offended so easily. again, guess its politically correct + leftists etc. dunno really. it's the f-in internet, its all dirty and stupid humor.

Well...the answer is yes. proud and shamelessly. if people choose to be offended so easily by the internet, its their own problem. cut the crap. there's no censorship around it at any website -mostly.

I will not advice a Presonus audio USB audio interface, customer support is crap and interface bad quality. I had quality issue with 2 brand new interfaces, issue of doubling effect with direct and returned signal. Audio interface is mandatory if you want to sample an external gear and start serious music making. With internal audio ship your signal will be mixed with noise and most of the time electronic noise. You can purchase a new 2nd generation scarlett 2I2 or 2I4 if you need midi interface. As it has just been replace by 3 rd generation, prices dropped.

After adopting a PC into my setup I'm realizing how easy and cheap it is to build a powerful one. I attempted to make it a hackintosh but after a few days of resolving endless boot issues i ended up getting an iMac and paused on that. The PC is actually handling some heavy work-loads slaved to the Mac. I can say windows has random quirks that poppup and need repairs more frequently then Mac though

Where I come from everybody uses Mac. It's not for nothing that the entire professional post-production industry runs on them. Apple is a pain in the arse, but their products are reliable. Also agree with the other posters regarding SSD - do it if you can afford to.
