I hate the clicks/beeps. I actually found where ableton keeps the metronome samples and replaced them with some hat samples. open on the one. choked for the other counts

In Studio One 3, you can add whatever drum samples you want and save them as a preset in the metronome. I use some congas and bongos.

DrumR, Drumatic and Poise seem to be the smallest sizewise <20mb, the rest are >50mb.

I think Reaper does too, but I'm looking for just a little more flexibility

Using reaper? They got a drum machine made with multiple resamplomatics in the reaper stash or somewhere else. I tried it before just because its native to reaper, but got frustrated with it and used poise. I still use poise when Im in REAPER.

  7. Actually, besides having a tiny footprint and inexpensive coming in at 49 smackers, it comes with a bunch of usable samples also. It is drag and drop from its own menu where you can tell it where to look for your sample folders, and you can point it in many directions. You can audition your sounds with controllable volume. You know what, I will paste the info from the One Small Clue site because actually, there is a shitload of useful features which make it a great value and super sweet drum tool (you can also do some rudimentary editing). Here goes Zenarcist...
Poise features 16 drum pads, which can each use 8 samples. Sample layers have parameters for pitch, volume and balance, as well as amplitude and pitch envelopes. There are several sample switching types including random, velocity and round-robin.

A browser allows samples to be previewed and loaded via drag and drop. (Drag and drop works from several sources including windows explorer and some host applications.) Samples can also be copied/moved from pad to pad with drag and drop.

Direct, straightforward, no frills and no bloat!

    Features
    • 16 drum pads
    • 8 samples per drum pad with various sample switching modes (round-robin, random, layered and velocity split)
    • Sample browser with preview
    • Amplitude and pitch envelopes for samples
    • Distortion, lowpass filter, highpass filter and ring modulation effects
    • Humanisation
    • 2 - 16 stereo outputs
    • Edit multiple pads simultaneously
    • 8,16,24 and 32 bit WAV, AIF and SND file format support
    • Drag and drop sample loading
    • Patch import & export support from Chicken Systems
    Included Sample Content
    Team DNR Drum Kits
Poise ships with an exclusive set of 30 drum kits created by Team DNR. These drum kits provide a collection of ready-to-go, bread and butter sounds suitable for pop and electronic productions. Also included are 200 individual cells with effect and modulation parameters set. These individual drum hits can be mixed and matched for quick custom drum kit creation.

    WaveShaper Drum Kits
    [IMG]
WaveShaper has a wonderful collection of vintage drum machines, compressors, tube amps and other equipment. He's created a collection of 10 electronic drum kits for Poise with a distinctly raw and characterful edge.

    ModeAudio Drum Kits
ModeAudio provides 4 electronic drum kits full of unique and carefully crafted sounds.

    Goldbaby Samples
A small selection of Goldbaby's free samples have been included. Goldbaby is respected for his detailed sampling of classic equipm

D16 Group Drumazon may be your 'sort of glorified metronome.'

+1 for iDrum if you can find it, otherwise ImageLine Drumaxx - very small footprint and quite easy to use.

(OT: If around 30MB and non-VST is still OK for you, there's another FREE option: Caustic!
Available for both Win and Mac on singlecellsoftware.com.
You can just use the "BeatBox" but easily add more stuff in case it's not enough.
Very easy to use but deep if you want to.
Or NanoStudio (http://blipinteractive2.co.uk) if you prefer MPC-style handling. FREE on Mac and Win too, but >60MB.
Of course there are many others, but these are the ones I'd consider "quick and easy".)

I used Poise for a very long time. Simple and fun to use. Its probably the lightest out of them all.

I like this and Poise, they are both small apps and complement each other nicely. I'd say use them both!
