Can anybody recommend a good one? I had one in mind but I can't remember the name :) It's mainly for composing, so it doesn't need to be anything fancy.

I'll always recommend the Alesis SR-16. It's a breeze to configure and its design and ease of use have passed the test of time. The sounds are kind of dated, but in 1995 they didn't seem cool to me either.

Not that I know of. You know, maybe Addictive Drums 2 Standalone or EZ Drummer 2. I guess the latter has an arranger. I was about to buy an SR-16 for the third time in my life, when I found an interesting iPad drum machine: DrumPerfect Pro. Less money, the same kind of sequencing style, and better sounds. I don't know if you have and iPad or not, but maybe it's time to jump the gun.

I'm looking for something simple with a small size, a sort of glorified metronome.

Maybe something like this, Guda Audio DrumR

I haven't tried it myself but it seems small enough to fit your needs. It's on the sister site btw.

One small clue - poise. I used to use this a lot before ableton had a drumrack.
Really basic, just the nitty gritty. 16 pads and ADSR is all you get.

Its got all kinds of skins and come with some decent libs.

Those are a little overkill for what hes looking for. Full sequencing and hi-res guis?
poise is small, takes up a small square of screen real estate, and superlight on the cpu. Ive used it for years, years ago. Ive used almost all of them in those articles.
And heres the funny thing. Ive been watching music production tutorials for 10+YEARS. Almost all producers work with the sounds on the timeline. Theres been a few where they use some kind a drum synth/sampler but usually only to beef up a beat they made with raw samples on the time line. theres very few who ive seen actually make a beat in one.
Always figured i would see more pros using them.

Now rock music is different, you need a full multisampled drum plug like ezdrummer or AD.

A discussion about who's right or wrong? I won't participate. Also, I don't make any assumptions. I just read the thread title and the post. It gives me 2 informations:
    1) He's looking for "Drum Machines With A Small Footprint", which can either be disksize or cpu load.
    2) He has one in mind but can't remember the name.

For the last point I linked to lists of drum synths, in the hope the one he has in mind is among them. For the first point I proposed Drumatic 3. Nothing more, nothing less.

For acoustic drum samples - MT Power Drumkit http://www.powerdrumkit.com/ (free, low CPU, small size compared with other, comes with an assortment of built in drum beats as well)

Who looking for anything. He did SAY a "glorified metronome" in the post. I just told him from experience and using them.
Instead of googling articles paid for by sponsors.
Keep the debates to the quasi political click baiting threads....LoL

I first thought, what's wrong with you. But now I see it's your ego. Of course. You recommended one, so it must be the ultimate answer. Ignoring that I also recommended one (btw, a free one as opposed to your advertising of a 50 bucks rompler), sure, why should any proposal have a right to exist after you recommended the one and only solution.

Poise is actually the one I was thinking of, but I couldn't remember the name. I was searching for Porpoise haha :)

I'Il give it a spin  It's for a secondary computer that I use for developing ideas, my audio computer has got all the hardcore stuff on it.

iZotope iDrum maybe, it's old now, but small and does the job, and may be available somewhere...

As it was mentioned earlier, there's a Kontakt version of the Alesis SR-16 available, or rather was, http://0on3.wordpress.com/ is gone

Does anybody else dislike metronomes? They put me off what I am trying to do with all that clicking :)

Well, it was the ULTIMATE one he was looking for. You need to stop reading between the lines and looking for conflict. We all make music, some just have more or different experience and want to help cause we have been in the exact same place that they are now.
looking for a small drum rompler, been there, offered my solution with a direct answer.
