the dark/night mode looks awesome, and they mentioned "Studio Edition", surely not free anymore, but is it possible it will be a subscription based ?

Standalone will still be free, VST will cost something like 150 bucks.

Yeah there has been quite a lot of drama. I won't reveal my identity here, let's just say I was one of the first ones to call him out on his bullshit years ago. Since then we've even established a resistance group (which became a shitposting group and then a boring, dead group).

Yeah, it's a bit of a shame because VCV rack is really great. There's a guy who does tutorials on YouTube and I've found it a very helpful way of learning the complexities of modular before trying to figure out whether to take the plunge or not. (I don't think I will, but there are some really great free modules out there that do some really cool stuff.)

From the programmer: 'VCV Rack Community Edition will be GPLv3 (free/open-source). VCV Rack Studio Edition will be $99 ($149 after release sale) and include VST2 plugin support (+more plugin formats later) and professional support.'

Also: 'The way that the plugin handles multithreading has changed in ways that will drastically improve performance.'

and: 'The featured Studio Edition patch contains several modules which would consume high CPU if they were VST plugins instead: modal synthesizer, vintage-modeled vocoder, granular synthesizer, 4/4-channel room reverb simulator, several polyphonic oscillators, etc. VCV Rack's multi-threaded engine was not enabled for the demo but will likely be available for the VST plugin version upon release.'

Reminds a bit of what happened with Gearslutz and Meg Lee Chin. I hope enough people decide to boycott VCV so something better, and hopefully open-source for real, can take it's place.

That's a damn shame. The person who wrote that is some kind of evil genius as far as I'm concerned and could have really offered a TON of benefit to the community. This is why companies need boards of directors, imho.

Yes, definitely worth a read. A sad tale caused by another egomaniacal fuckhead.

I haven't had time to invest in VCV properly yet (you know, "one day..."), but now I never will. As they say, plenty of fish in the sea.

I have decided for Cycling74's Max 8. I start to understand it now. It is awsome, i can even load VST plugins (64bit only) and VST2 only. But with renaming vst3 to dll, you might have a chance on windows that Max 8 loads it. Can be found here: https://cycling74.com/forums/will-max-8-be-compatible-with-vst3-plug-ins

I also like the way how you can build your subpatches, save them for later and reuse them. (A browser would be great to manage them or i just havnt figured out, how to proper organize them?)

It pretty much helps to understand how to write a Plugin in C++ with JUCE.

Something i do not expect from VCV Rack building.

But i guess the majority of people here only want to use existing modules and not build them, themselves?

Hmm maybe we are lucky and VCV Rack 2 VST is crackable and we can make it work that way?
The idea itself for such a modular approach was and is very good. But making Open Source Projects profitable is a somewhat hard path to walk and hard to figure out some valid and fair guidelines. Obviously not happened here as one can read in his blog post.

Then i rather use something close sourced like Max 8, where your patches stay your patches unless you decide to release them for free or sell them, but in the end it is still possible to modify and reuse ideas and parts from existing maxpatches. But it is fine.

This stuff would probably better be served by a dedicated software modular thread, but you might be interested to look at Pd (Pure Data) by Miller S. Puckette (the MSP in Max/MSP). Patchable environment, extend with C/C++ externals if you wish, all under BSD-3 license. I'd recommend the Purr Data distribution as it contains a proverbial shitload of stuff.

Go ahead with the modular thread! id be interested into it.

I tried PD, the interface and the learning curve was to high for me ... (i know its free and i also got recommend on a few places, since it is free)

So far i know in gen you can also write C++ code, to test any algo for reuse in a C++ in JUCE.

    Sorry for OFFTOPIC!

which is of course something really different.

though since i have once made building "modules" in it more popular, some people do it, too there. :)

the majority is such a lazy and boring guy^^

of course i am very biased for a #reason, but i think that one should first of all build modules for a PC software in respect to the OS and computer paradigms.

modelling analog voltage is only a compromise between worlds, and with VCV even a 2020 mac pro is "slow".

nothing against emulating things, i just question if it always the best approach.

however i think its canvas is great. the scrolling is sooo smooth, i could become jealous with the clumsy options when i want to build something similar in max. (actually i am "scrolling" by half screensizes most of the time in my enviroments)

people used to share more of their work 20 years ago, i sometimes miss that. and sharing was also easier than now, mostly because of apple, but also because of changes at C74.

and speaking carefully, the gen~ license model is not ideal, either.

noticed that too late. another vote for moving us.

regarding VCV going VST: live and reason also wanted to really, really avoid VST, but people kept asking for it, and then they made it.

Just wondering can you easy inetegrate VCV into a DAW with virtual audio cables and virtual midi cables?

Yeah it must have been a crazy work for them to implement VCV into a VST format?
I mean it is resizable (with juce you can implement that quickly), but all the other framework, wow.

Yeah VST has its own problems (which mainly comes due Steinberg's devs being bitchy and picky) ...

Because it is simple to use it inside a DAW. I mean i wanted to use also Max 4 Live instead of Max, because it was just easier to get sound through it. Maybe people thought the same for VCV?

The standalone is really good i think from what it is.

It's fairly trivial to route the audio from VCV into Reaper using the ReaRoute Asio drivers. Works really well for me.

It will not be different from a midi sequencer plugin, let's say like the HY stuff. There are cv to midi converting modules in VCV.

But if you're asking whether it will be possible to take a virtual cable and patch it to any parameter inside your DAW, nah I don't think so. Everything will have to be converted to midi inside the plugin, then you can do whatever you want with that midi.
