In my opinion Hans Zimmer's version of the main theme doesn't hold a candle to the original John Williams piece but neither did the movie. Not nearly as inspiring and I find it just meh. The movie was just shiny crap for a lost generation. However for what it is you did an amazing job. :mates:

    First off, thanks :)

Second – if we were talking, say, Batman, I would agree about Hans Zimmer's theme being inferior because in my book, this is Batman expressed through music:

HZ's Dark Knight theme is more epic and aggresive, but doesn't work that good as a true theme I'd say. However, in Man of Steel, when I saw the "Flight" scene, I thought: "This is perfect." I mean, there is a contagious feeling of victory to it, and I thought it fit nicely.

But I find it really hard to compare Elfman/Williams and Zimmer, because he is quite a different composer than the rest - more about tension and aggression through shorter notes and often just some intervals playing, rather than complete themes, often also with lots of decorative stuff (string runs, harp runs, woodinds runs). And don't get me wrong, I love JW's music; after all, is it even possible not to like for example the Star Wars theme or the Imperial March? It's just hard to compare because to me, it's almost like a different kind of music, even though it's still orchestral soundtracks we're talking about. I guess HZ's music is a bit closer to me because of its simplicity - I am a fan of minimalist music (Tiersen, Einaudi, Glass...).

Perhaps it's just because I am also much more of a Batman fan than a Superman fan (saw only the 1st Christopher Reeves Superman and Man of Steel); either way, it's HZ's musical conception of Superman that I like the most.

I enjoy Hans Zimmer's albums from 2004 era (before Batman Begins) - his more recent albums became as you say epic and agressive.
My main favourities are Last Samurai, Pearl Harbor and Gladiator.

Man, I love Gladiator, both the movie and the soundtrack. Personally, I think that it's HZ at his finest because it combines both his beatiful sense of simplicity but at the same time, it is also very emotional (track Now We Are Free - pure genius).
