    Need some inspiration?

As a listening exercise, I like to travel back a few generations of influences to see what I can hear, e.g. The Velvet Underground > Van Der Graaf Generator > Joy Division > Radiohead > Arcade Fire :)

After all your previous posts, when I saw the title at the rss tab of my ff, I was sure it was you again. Well-done

It's quite interesting if you know what to listen out for :) I was a bit intrigued by the fact that both Joy Division and Radiohead have Van Der Graaf Generator down as an influence, and of course Joy Division is a big influence of Radiohead, and The Velvet Underground is an influence of just about everybody, which brings us to Arcade Fire who have Joy Division/New Order and Radiohead as major influences!

Besides all of that, it's nice to hear something that I wouldn't normally listen to, also with a critical ear paying attention to any bits that might sound familiar :)

They make my hair stand on end!

"The Velvet Underground > Van Der Graaf Generator > Joy Division > Radiohead > Arcade Fire"

I don't know arcade fire but otherwise, yeah, I can hear that.

I find this stuff a bit "heavy": old and contemplative, a bit self-consciously important, whereas JD and RH have a greater pop and punk sensibility whilst still 'keeping it real'.

Live, I would quite possibly love it.

Apparently John Lydon from the Sex Pistols was also a fan ... the plot thickens, who is this band that never sold any records :)

My music collection goes from "Van Campenhout, Roland - Never Enough" to "Van Etten, Sharon - Because I Was In Love" without any sign of VDGG (though I have heard them before). And whilst I have 8 Arcade Fire folders I am sure I have never heard any of it.

The rest is all good: i know it. But if your influence chart is right, I wonder why I don't have any.

  10. I was a Van Der Graaf virgin, president of the club. My passion took hold, got the better of me. I'll know I'll never be the same and I have only Zenarcist to blame.

Wow VDGG, I've been listening to them for over 40 years.... My favourite band, and I thought I was the only one.

And finally Peter Hammill [ VDGG vocalist solo] at his finest

"The Sphinx in the Face (1977)" seems to be moving towards Indie territory, whereas the earlier stuff was more Prog. I'm guessing this is what Joy Division picked up on, though Radiohead were more Prog and probably picked up on their earlier stuff too.

You don't believe, but we all here in Russian Siberia had fun to see Peter Hammill in our city of Barnaul on a concert, far ago in 1996. It was incredible!

Yeah, I'm really getting into it  I also found a live video performance. It's definitely not the kind of stuff I normally listen to :)
