I would use them sparce, you can make a bunch of effects on the vocals but then use them to reinforce here and there, almost as they were another percusive element. Think of rap chours and such.

 

It's more common on Soundcloud than Youtube, definitely. I've never had it happen, but if you check enough files out on there, you will run into some tracks with it eventually. Their servers are so high traffic, it's likely an upload issue, because there are other little quirks you can get. Glitches, clicks and pops that aren't even in the file. Downloadable copies will not have the same issue.

 

As others have noted, the foundation is perfectly fine, but it does feel a bit empty. So, if you're looking for suggestion, mine would be to avoid filling it up too much with effects for now and literally just add more layers.
Up to 0:55, besides vocals and drums, it's mostly the arp and the occasional guitar hit. The section from 0:55 switches to a panning synth and a vocal pad, if I'm not mistaken. So there's a lot of room, in terms of arrangement, left open to add elements.

 

In my opinion, that didn't work very well. The original is a whole song with many harmonies accompanying the vocal melody nicely, most of that is missing in your cover.
