I have not done this myself, but I am someone who has had a very expensive Ultrafine Mac monitor fail for no reason. It may cause some small quirks to work around, but I would rather have a Retina type quality display manufactured by Apple than by LG. Particularly if you already own the older iMac.

The "hiccup" to his math however, is a 30"+ "Television" with a nice quality screen, instead of a "computer monitor/display"; can still cost under half what the iMac would, buying it used. Logic isn't going to care either way.

I just mean that having exceptional display quality isn't a priority with your DAW software. If you are doing graphic work like Color Correction; it will obviously matter to you a lot. When my $700 LG 27" Ultrafine died randomly, I switched to a 40" HD LED TV for 1/3 the price running off my powered hub's display port, and this has already lasted 2 years longer than the LG did. If I had an old iMac laying around, I would try this guys idea. He makes a valid point, but I might not buy an imac to do it on purpose.

 

I know Clone display is not so important for music production. The thing is, which display work well with Mac?

 

I can't find the exact model as mine on site, but this one is 32 for $209. Not curved. Lowest example price for iMac I see is about $350 for an i5 27". But it is a 5K Retina display, like the one in your linked video. That is pretty damn old. His idea is good, if you already have one.

You may need a different cable to use with Thunderbolt/usb-C on the mac, i have it connected to a pretty expensive powered hub that already has DV and HDMI ports. You can find a similar size/price model from probably 10 other manufacturers. A similar Ultrafine/Studio would be like 1000$. lol

This looks nice. Do you know what this works like if you have Logic Remote already open on the ipad? I am going to look into this more.
I think an i5 iMac would be slow enough where using it as a monitor only could make sense. With an i7, I would be tempted to stick Logitech Flow on it and use both machines with the same kb and mouse.

 

Unfortunately have no clue, can't get hold of one locally either, I have a friend that would like to keep using his 5K iMac and hope he will manage to get it soon somewhere, will report any findings.
