SSD for OS and programs (including VST) and SATA for samples. I was also toying with the idea to run my projects on a small SSD.

I am not sure I understand you but I had a very stable configuration like this: SSD drive as C drive (windows system, plugs, program files). Then a second (1-2 TB) HDD as drive D (huge libs & project files). That SSD will serve you well and fits alot :) Good luck!

i´m not too sure i understand, i hear 2 questions
    1) is this a good drive?
    2) what is the best config?

the most stable Prosumer drives are Samsung SSD
    1) Samsung 850 Pro (5 year waranty)
    2) Samsung 850 Evo ( http://www.ldlc.com/fiche/PB00180183.html )

If you use a notebook (and don´t have the space) one of those drives might be enough
If its a desktop, use the ssd for all your downloads, instals and bacup everything to at least 1 better 2 "normal" hdd
there are loads of videos on how to instal and maintain a healthy ssd, but the "samsung magican software" worked great for me

all hard drives fail, its not if, it is when!!!

Like everyone else has said .
I use my ssd for OS , programs, plugins and have 5 external drives .4 sata HD one FireWire HD. One is for kontakt libraries, one for samples , ones for time machine and ones for back up of my product installers and FireWire is for recording my sessions . You can't go wrong with an ssd there solid . But if you on Mac I'd still make a clone after you've installed there's always that day when things go wrong and they do happen

i just upgraded to a sandisk 240 ssd. awesome

i store everything on the ssd, daw, plugz, projects.

load times are crazy fast. addictive keys fully loaded was 25s now 4s. addictive drums was 45 sec now 8 sec. kontakt libraries load in 1-2 sec. win 8.1 shutdown is 2 sec crazy fast. boot to desktop 15sec. all mixing plugins open instantly. An ssd update is THE best you can do to a production machine where speed is crucial. (of course ram and cpu helps too but...) so yeah , ssd all the way !

7,200 RPM for the SATA, WD Black is a good option.

Where I dont want to be
On my new PC, 32GB DDR4 2600mhz Ram and i7 Core 6700K, Liquid cooled Genesis Pro..

After much research I choose a 500GB Samsung EVO, and a 2TB WD Caviar Black SATA...to go with the other older drives I have all my less important stuff on..

for the price, cant beat em..

Both are Screaming fast and suit the purpose of Audio production very well at a reasonable price and great reputation for stability and long shelf life.

My main apps, Daws, Photoshop, Cinema 4D and plugins on the rocket powered SSD.. My main libs and samples on my New WD black 2TB and the rest of my crap neatly organized and backed up across about 6 older SATA's.

and finally as a fail safe 2nd back up... a couple of good, free Cloud accounts to back up my most important stuff and I'm good to go for another 5 years or so.

    These would be my recommendations.

    :chilling::cheers:

if you were unlucky with samsung doesn´t mean the whole brand is shit, anekdotal evidence IS merde ;)

most test show samsung as CLEAR contender in performance and most importantly in health after TB writen!
and this test with a faulty firmware no less (corrected now)
18 months and 2.2 petabytes (and this isn´t the only test)
    http://techreport.com/review/27909/the-ssd-endurance-experiment-theyre-all-dead/4
and yes kingston (only hyper x) is a very good choice too.

G-Raid systems are good, but i´m not too sure you need the performance
if you arn´t streaming loads of kontakt instruments (and i mean loooads), the price to performance ratio was quite unbalanced
of course this is just, imo ;)

In my latest pc I put 3 x 250gb ssds and 2 mechanical drives.

1 ssd is os, programs, and plugins, another is omnisphere and frequently used massive kontakt libraries, third is for projects and typical crap (my documents, my music, desktop etc). 1TB mechanical drive for other kontakt libraries, and 2TB for drums and samples etc.
