Instead of storing all my drum/sfx/audio samples on my laptops hd, it is better to put the on an ext hd?..

so a 2Tb Lacie w/ USB 3.0/thunder bolt capability... TOTALLY devoted to sample use, will make my daw sessions run better?

Am I to understand that a project with audio samples (like drum sounds) which are used by both samplers AND also organized and played on regular tracks, can actually be read from an EXT. hd and yield better performance?

    I can't believe this?

I have a solid state 250Gb drive on my MBP, but it is pretty used up... It would be amazing if I can take all sounds and move to separate hd.

How has been you guys' experience with this?... is it really worth the hassle?

thanks dude!!.. I was looking at some Lacie ssd's... I know I want an SSD, and I also know it would be nice to have the ability to daisy-chain. I am not sure if the one you showed has that (in other words only has 1 port).

But will look more at that one, and that site.

EDIT: ok yeah... that is a great site... it looks like the Lacie one I was looking at got great reviews... and I had no idea that THAT too has cable included..

Thank you community  you all are the best!!!!

Those WD My Passeport Pro are NOT SSD but RAID HDD, so the speed won't be as fast as SSD, but maybe that's ok for your need.
They say in RAID0 : as far as 230 MB/s

    better think twice about that.

I suppose you can't install a second SSD inside you MBP ?

WD's my passport pro, is an hdd based solution and it doesn't give the ability to daisy chain more devices, since it doesn't have any more slots. It is quite cheaper than most solutions though, with adequate performance. Either way chances are the "other" device you may want to connect to your thunderbolt chain will have the usual two ports and your wd pp will go last to the chain. But yes it is an inconvenience.
The Lacie drives are expensive but typically excel in build quality. I have a Lacie Firewire400/800/Usb2 4x250gb (internal JBOD) hdds external drive for 13 years and still works flawlessly.
Truly speaking, the best starting option as @sham69 (i used to love this band as a kid) very nicely indicated, is to take out the optical drive and exchange it for an ssd or hdd. You can always put the Optical drive in an external enclosure and use it as a usb drive if you need to burn/play any disk. The internal drive has the best performance vs money ratio as it will connect to the sata III port of your macbook. Some external thunderbolt drives with two or more ssds in a internal raid array partition can yield faster (than Sata3's 6mbps) speeds but their cost is much higher than a typical single internal drive. Judging by your saying that atm you work on a single 250gb ssd drive, the secondary ssd will help free some space and gather your libraries neatly in one place.
    Hope this helps
EDIT: If you need any help with choosing an internal drive just say so :)

I have been using a Transcend SJM300 2TB external HD Thunderbolt/USB for my Komplete Ultimate Libraries. Since I work on PC and Mac I formatted two partitions for the respective formats. The rest of the drive is formatted exfat so that is where my samples reside for multiplatform use. It is connected continually for 4 years now and there are no problems in terms of speed. It cost me €190 but I guess you can get it cheaper in the USA. I can recommend it for it`s reliability and sturdiness.

    @taskforce

I am confused with your talk about optical drive... I have an mbp from 2015 that has no cd/dvd drive... so I am confused.

    Will go with Lacie.

Also, on a separate issue (which I have another thread started for)...I can't get Omnisphere to successfully update and authorize.

I installed and authorized the earliest v2 version that comes with the hexwars keygen... but when I update to 2.3.2h (or whatever hell the latest update is), I can't get the authorize to work...

I saw in release page to batchmod au/vst and then use rsr keygen?... I batchmodded (though they did not need it apparently), and just tried to use hex keygen a number of times (which actually yields the same challenge/response code).

I do not know what the 'rsr keygen" is or where to acquire...
    any help with this guys?

@GreatJobChamp Ooohhh, yep you are correct. External drive is the way to go then :) About Omni, the original keygen should work, just tried it on my hackintosh. Perhaps you didn't need to re-patch ? oh, the "rsr" keygen is the one you are using, hexwars rlsd it on "loan" if i recall, someone correct me if i am wrong plz

turns out that old Hex keygen does not work for newer updates, and the second to last update had a new keygen in the release... THAT was why I didn't know what people were talkin about.

Also, my AU version is not opening in Ableton.. only the VST... I wonder if yours works?

Thanks again for the help on the ext's... so happy

Quite correct. i was still in version 2.3.0 lol in the hackOSX and i thought it was the 2.3.1f (which isn't the latest anyway). Omg, i need to get more sleep, starting to losing it lol.
EDIT: Nope, AU Omni not working on Live 9.7.0 . Haven't tried 9.7.1 yet.
