Didn't know that they were updating TB and USB again, but if what he says in the video is true, that manufacturers won't need a license and controller from Intel to have TB and USB 4 ports/support, this should mean that we might see many audio interface manufacturers going from USB2/3 and TB3 to USB4 and maybe even a price drop because of not needding to pay licenses right?

What are your thoughts on this? :)

I look forward to Thunderbolt 4 as a replacement for my firewire interface.
I didn't heard about the license being free going forward though. But if that is true it will be great since more AMD MB might have Thunderbolt included.

It would be good even if only for the unification and expansion (AMD as commented before) due to less restrictive licenses.
Even better if they'd unify TB and USB, though they come from very different places and could be very complex.

  6. I already have about 20kgs of waste in the form of outdated backup drives. Many Firewire 800. So, when Thunderbolt 1 came along I purchased an adaptor so my new Mac could keep using FW800. My Apollo interface was FW800. Eventually I purchased a TB1 card and over time, my externals became TB1. Then I swapped out the card in the Apollo for A TB2 and likewise externals were changed to the new speed as well. I still don't have a Thunderbolt 3 device anywhere because I can't afford to replace the entire core working structure of my studio, which would cost more then $10,000 (yes, I have run the figures) just to get to TB3. And now they're saying get ready for TB and USB4?
    What do I think? Guess.

backup drives? why not just use a NAS? something like 4x8TB with 1-drive fault-tolerance RAID and you shouldn't need to bother with connectivity anymore (except ethernet or wifi on your computer device)

Hahaha! I absolutely sympathise with you! I literally bought a new pc 3 weeks ago just so I could have TB3 and USB3.2 and now they will certainly become obsolete within a few years :facepalm:I would like to believe that USB4 is going to be the new standard and stay like that for a while but looking back at the history we will most likely get USB4.1, 4.2, 4.3 etc., ThunderboltX and two more new supermegahyperspeed cable types in the near future

Sorry to be offtopic, but i am looking for this cable and can't really find it:

male usb-c tot male mini display port (thunderbolt 2)

The cable is ment for connecting an usb-c audio interface from Presonus to my macbook pro retina 2015 (which has 2 mini display port
    sockets).

Does such a cable even exist ?
    TIA !

If you watch the video to the end, it is unfortunately the case that Intel still requires the installation of an Intel controller chip for TB4 for every computer and TB4 device, so that TB4 devices will most likely not fall in price.
It's only that Intel starts to include TB3 controller chips into their processors starting with the icelake mobile processors and has made TB3 royalty free to build a basis for their TB4 standard. So we can expect to see only cheaper TB3 devices in te future.
    OMG. I love Intel.

It would be cheaper contracting tuberculosis, the other TB. A few doses of antibiotics and D.C. al fine, you're good to go. $10,000 would be insane money just to port over, it would be worse than spitting blood.

I'll kick in $500 to help make it happen.

You could start a Go Fund Me and before long you'd be Mother Superior!
I tell you what, I'll bump it another $500. Now you're 10% of the way there! Lena Belardo...Enchantée.
