i asked no avanger which effect or setting on compressor makes the silent pars louder and leaves loud parts untouched, so he came kindly as always up with this pics and explaining.

the pics are so good i have to make thread bout.

    greetings to no avanger

great demonstration @No Avenger , I dont understand why there is no good upward/downward multiband compressor 3rd party plugin , considering how popular is ableton multiband dynamics ott

Downward compressors are mostly shipped with the DAW.
Most popular 3rd party are probably iZotope and FabFilter.

Upward compression, on the other hand, is pretty rare, but nonetheless sometimes very useful.

nice diagram indeed - Flux makes the ultimate dynamics plugin Alchemist. Its all you need really; upward and downward compression and expansion in one plugin all separate processes.

Not exactly. Unless I just misunderstand you.

"Each band presents a complete dynamic processing section including; compressor, expander, de-compressor and de-expander, all working in parallel employing independent Dynamic Ratio and L.I.D. (Level Independent Detector), two parameters that are kind of unique to dynamic processing, using the dynamic range content of the signal and not just the signal levels as standard processors do, parameters for each section."

So if i understood it correctly, if you downward compression and then make-up the gain to dry signal that equals to uplift/upward compression. So then there is no difference between both of them. In what situation is uplift compression can really come in handy ??

when just wanting silent parts louder and not making loudest parts more silent and use make up gain and overprocess stuff you liked as it was

in the other thread i said it already but its to funny most and also huge one compressor tutorials dont even cover the existence of upward compression...

Hey guys, noob question here, can't you achieve the same effect of upward compression by compressing normally and increasing the output gain relatively?

... is the normal aka most common way of compression, only this word 'uplift' is new.

Upward comression is defined as making low part louder while leaving the louder ones untouched.

    1. Downward compression - loud parts compressed, below threshold is untounched. Usual compression, limiting, maximizing.
    2. Upward compression - loud parts untouched, below threshold is louder. No punch, no groove. Vocals' breath and background noise can be louder. Imagine that you still have a dry recorded sound, but noise is louder, background stuff is louder, more reverb tails, but still no punch and groove.
    3. Upward expansion - add punch, snap and transients to sound, uncompress the compressed sound.
    4. Downward expansion - lower the noise below threshold, smooth gating or extreme gating. Lower the quieter sound, less background sounds, less reverb tails.

You can add background quiet sounds by downward compression (compress and gain/make up) or upward compression, but you decide how to do this. Both methods will lead to different results.

    Simple description.

Thanks for the reply guys! Now that I've slept on it and thought for a while, I'd assume the difference in results come from how the attack and release settings impact the sound, as depending on the type of compressor(up v down), it shapes a different part of the sound?
