Bro, just do it. I went from 1600 to 5600x, it was amazing. Nothing needs more to be said. Do it, stop pussyfooting getting "opinions", ur upgrading, it's a perfect upgrade.

If your goal is to have a lot of stuff in vms running you need ram, lots of.
It is a good idea to upgrade the proc, but do you have enough ram for the task?
If not, and you end up throwing out your existings dimms to get bigger ones you might as well wait one generation further,
as mainboards aren't that expensive now. I had to have that 700 bucks gigabyte board that managed to have the 570 chipset without the cooler, now you get very decent chipsets without fan in the 200 bucks region.

The Virus emu actually serves as a good benchmark, that gives a good idea of the performance differential.

Maybe we should start ranking CPUs by how many instances and/or polyphony we can get from that plugin

MSI B450 Gaming Plus, which is compatible with the latest BIOS (which is installed, OFC)

I've got 32GB on this box, which is good enough for testing databases and several docker containers, so ATM this is not an issue. Always could do with more of course, but that's for the full upgrade in a couple of years.

So what I've benchmarked, the current loads I'm running are more CPU than memory or I/O bound.

I'm not wanting opinions, I'm wanting practical experiences regarding audio, not the same thing.

But seeing no one who has replied hasn't anything particularly negative to say about that aspect, I think it's a done deal for me.

The 5700x is not on the compatible CPU list: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B450-GAMING-PLUS/support#cpu

Even if it were compatible, the board is limiting 3th Gen Ryzen:
    • B450 is PCIe 2.0 while X570 is PCIe 4.0
    • Less PCIe lanes (8 vs 16) meaning you might be limiting your internal high speed peripherals such as M.2 drive
    • Memory speed: max is 3466 Mhz while optimal for a 3th gen Ryzen is 3600 Mhz
You might not care about the limitations but that doesn't matter if the CPU won't work in the board.

Sorry for not answering your 'Is it worth it' question but I thought this info mattered :)

Well the number of maximal instances is limited by the maximal number of threads you have. two emu instances on one thread isnt going to work.

But well it indicates that that the single core performance is quite strong if you can use all its polyphony (26voices on the virus C) in one go.
As this emulates on full true hardware instance.

I dont know of any synths using so much juice for one instance.

I have thread for Live performance benchmarks. Let me find it and post the link later, maybe you can compare my 5700G with your current CPU that way? (This uses the Live 11 demo project, so you should have that already.)

    https://audiosex.pro/threads/ableton-live-performance-thread.63228/

I think AMD drops new CPUs in august if i remember right, so maybe be patient and wait those 2-3 months?

No, it's a good call reminding about this, but it's misleading information somewhat.

Ryzens of the same generation work already with the latest (beta) bios and looking it up on the net people have working setups with 5700x. See that things like 5700GE and 5800X work on that list, it's not like MSI has ever been speedy about upgrades. *edit:* MSI has made a statement that all 3rd gen Ryzens will work on their B450 boards, so basically all AM4 is game.

PCIe generation will not matter on this box, there would be no benefit from getting PCIe4.0 instead of the current PCIe3.0. The machine has STAT SSDs instead of M.2. I could theoretically upgrade to a M.2 system drive but that would mean I would have to drop 2 SSDs as the MB cuts down on SATA ports if a M.2 is installed. My audio interface (via USB) or my GPU would not benefit from PCI upgrade.

I know it would not be a ultimate upgrade, but as the initial post said, I'm looking for to extend this system's life instead of going all in with next gen shit.

I'll check out that thread, thanks!

And as for new chips... I don't buy first gen stuff if I can avoid it, and as mentioned previously, that would entail getting a new PSU, new MB, new memory and so on, so it would be a "full upgrade" instead of this "only drop-in a new CPU" kind of upgrade. I will do a full upgrade eventually in a couple of years, but not now. We'll see what kind of stuff is available then :)

The current ones drop then by 50-100€. And i guess your current cpu can make it that time span.

That's strange because Virus C (latest EMU ver.) runs at 1-2% CPU usage on my Ryzen 5600X. I wanted to try with 26 voices but couldn't get it to play more than 5-6 voices (still 1-2% CPU) for some reason.

Dont trust the DAW cpu meter, look into the task manager that shows the real cpu usage.

You can use unison, choose 8, you should get it quite high with that.
Also remember additional FX reduce the voice count.

I've managed to get it to play 19 voices showing 5.4-5.8% in the Task Manager. Deeper JS preset. Virus C 6.5

I am going to give you a piece of advice regarding running it cooler, or running any CPU cooler and wasting less energy: down-volt it in the BIOS a bit. You will get a CPU [be it Intel or AMD] that will run normally, just cooler. These days, well in the older days too, CPUs work at unnecessarily high voltages by default. You can put any CPU to about -0.200V lower and will be amazed at how much of a difference in temperatures 0.200V can make.

It's good move bro. AMD 5XXXX series is really great and I'm planning on doing the move to i7-5700G myself. iGPUs are way to go when it comes to audio workstations. Still, if you pair a 5700X with a mid-class AMD GPU, it should give you similar DPC results with a smidgen worse DPC, but better for gaming and video work.

    Cheers!

p.s. you've basically answered your own question and so well. :) Just go for it. New gen will come with new problems and it will cost more. You don't want to be a beta tester, eh? PCIe gen 3 is completely alright for SSDs and then some.

There is a newer version of Virus emu v1.2.19 for download under "beta" on their server and it's even more efficient. I've just tested it [Linux version]. It's great!
