Did I misunderstand something when I read this? ... Is there ever a reason now to pay $300 for a plugin rather than $31?

Wonder if UAD will respond similarly?

 

I don't know they spend thousand of dollars developing software then giving it out for just $31/month. Just curios, not complaining.

 

Maybe it's a better business plan to rent it to 100 000 people at 31$ each month than sell it to 10 000 people only one time.

But the thing developper does a lot too, is to make you think that a plugin is worth 300$ so you buy it when it's on sale at 50. A plugin that cost as much as a DAW is always overpriced, just like fancy clothes (doesn't say it's bad though, and at least they don't use children or prisonners to make it)

But it's nice to see big company getting together to offer suscription plan, the PA offer was already good before NI & iZotope joining. It's the best way to avoid having multiple suscription.

 

I can't remember the figures of how many customer accounts they have at PA, but it was in the millions.
With a million customers, if just 1% (~10,000) of users buy a plugin a month for $30 (which is solidly in the impulse buy territory), that's $300K+/mo revenue.

I remember during a sale once they posted they'd sold 40,000+ plugins in a single day...

Don't worry, they're doing fine with their business models...

 

Forever29 is not a rental plan. It's a sales incentive, just like the loyalty vouchers are.

 

Dirk Urlich publicly stated that PA has over 1 million subcribers as of end of February 2022. And growing. Add those who just buy some plugins on discounts from time to time and it's insane amount of money for digital products sale.

Indeed, I mixed up with their 25$ suscription, I never really notice that forever29 thing before (I though it was refering to their usual promo code). It's another good deal.

But at the end, both suscription method are like some sort of "rent to own" system in disguise, which is nice. And because their offer keep growing, people suscribe thinking they will stop once they own what they want, but stay because they wait for the new one (at least a big part of people who don't realize that having to much plugin to choose get become an issue)

 

Finally we get a standalone API 2500 from Lindell! Been using the one in their 50 Series Channel plug-in a lot and it's my favorite API comp so far. Waves and DMG Audio are also great (probably the best plug-in Waves have managed to make), but the saturation in the Lindell feels a bit... juicier. Although, I have no experience with a real 2500 so I'm just going by ear.

Hendyamps The Oven, SPL PQ, Looptrotter and Tomo Audio Labs Lisa are also very interesting. Lisa especially! IIRC it's one of just a few analog dynamic EQ designs there are. SPL PQ is another one I can't understand why they haven't already made, but I'm glad that we are finally getting it

they emulate the gui. any mastering eq like equilibrium can do more.

Looks like they're also adding an Unfiltered Audio effect (Needlepoint), the NEOLD U17, an AMEK channel strip and Silver Bullet mk2. They look great imho

I think they're looking to totally dominate the plugin market, by making the best tools accessible to everyone. Good luck to them
