Thanks Mykal, interesting read. I used and had ns10's for years, and hated the frick out them, as they sounded like pencils being shoved into my ear, but this helps explain it…. knew there was a technical explanation, I just went with the fact that if you could make it sound good on those, it would usually translate elsewhere…. but this explains it pretty well. cool!

Trivia fact: The tree used to make the paper cone for the NS-10's is now protected from harvesting and has caused the discontinuation of the model all together. :(

Claim to be a replacement. I havnt heard these or the originals though. But for £100 a pair on the passive models and £200 on the active its worth a risk.

I've read the article and maybe this is really one of the reasons why the NS-10
are commonly used in prof. studios.

In my experience there is another underestimated point:
I can work with them nearly the whole day without getting weary
    with my ears.

A prof. recording engineer has to sit about 8 hours at his workplace
and his hearing gets worse with every hour of concentration.
The NS-10 are a really helpful tool to do the job accurately.

    No secret at all.....

Actually, Yamaha itself has declared the HS50M and HS80M to be the substitute for their acclaimed NS10M. Of course the white cone is for show, no endangered trees involved. Even an improvement over them is the HS5 and HS7, as the HS50 and HS80 are out of production anymore. Of course, these are active speakers with room tuning EQ switches, and extended frequency range.

    Here's a detailed review of the HS50:

I have been using the HS50s for several years now and I'm able to get pretty good results now that I've gotten used to them. I will say that they ARE NOT NS10s! It is much easier to make a mix sound good with the HS50s and that's not always a good thing when it come to getting a mix to translate well. It still all comes down to getting to know your monitors and what they need to sound like for a good translation. I also can't say enough about using reference music as well.

I hated NS10's along with most of my muso friends.
A pair was being passed around our studios back in the 90's and no one could stick them. Think they are still packed away in a box somewhere!

I've been using HS50's and really like them so not sure Yamaha could say they are modern "replacements" for the NS10's.
