Has anyone here tried the Underdog courses? I am looking at buying "Foundation in Electronic Music Level 2". I like his videos but thought I should ask here in case anyone has had a bad experience with it.

It's just really expensive. Are you sure that you need this course? You can find lots of stuff and courses on sister site for free.

I agree with @tori, even though neither of us are directly answering your question. I'm not really a fan of techno (which is specifically Underdog's fave genre, I believe), but I've watched a lot of Underdog's YT videos, and I think he's a pretty good teacher. That said, I think even HE has enough free content to learn from. I wouldn't buy anything. As @tori said, lots of "free" content on the sister site.

You might get some good ideas on videos to watch if you explain what it is you're kinda looking for... mixing tips? Mastering tips? Sound design? how to write songs? Or pretty much everything? Lucas Pretolesi has a lot of great videos (and there are LOADS on the sister site). Im not much of a fan of his music, but I learned a bit of everything off of Com Truise's lesson on the sister site too.

Thanks for the replies! That’s really helpful.
I really should have said more about what I’m looking for, but honestly wasn’t sure if anyone would even read my post

I’m new to Ableton after using FL for a short while. Ableton makes so much more sense to me. Ideally if I can follow tutorial using Ableton, that would be a plus. I have a very eclectic taste in music, but as far as what I’m looking to learn, it’s more techno, industrial, DNB, ambient.
Honestly, any follow along tutorials would be good.

The Com Truise lesson could be great for me! I’ll see if I can find that.

go on sister site and search for the tutorial sites names and then Ableton after it. like do Udemy Ableton, Groove3 Ableton, Ask Ableton, Faderpro Ableton, etc. Read the comments and replies and you will get a good idea of how good the video tutorial is.

Many of them will say that one video is the be-all-end-all of whatever, and it's bs. you have to get proficient with the DAW. Then after that, with your Synths, and then your FX, and then Mixing. It doesn't matter if you can make a perfect techno rumble if you don't understand basics in the software you are going to use.

You can download anything you could ever need to learn, so don't fall for paying for some big course. A streaming subscription to one of them is way better than some big purchased download course. You aren't downloading, extracting, and keeping copies of them. If there is one authoritative book for Ableton (like there is for Logic), buy it and keep it on your desk. If you don't know how to do something, look it up.

Many producers who make good music are not great at teaching other people stuff. When you download a big course, and it sucks; you feel like you should watch the entire thing anyway because you have already invested the time to get the video. A subscription makes it way better, because if someones training style doesn't work for you; you can be watching something different in 2 minutes. When you find someone whose style you like, watch all their videos that you can find.

@clone Thanks for all the info. I saw someone else recommending a groove 3 subscription elsewhere on this forum. I’ll check out some of the “free” groove 3 videos on the sister site before I commit to anything.

For books on Ableton, it seems like the manual is my best friend :)

I agree with the other great advice you've received from the other members. I'd also suggest try not to concentrate on a particular genre, but listen or look at all genre tutorials, widen your net for a plentiful catch!

    try Youtube also like:

bthelick : loads of great dance music related tutorials on Ableton

    https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaMje122pGSvLfvuLylin8g

I could list loads on youtube but try that one to start with. Best of luck with it.

    Peace!

Your very welcome. Just on Com Truise, I think he's a synthwave producer. Try searching sister site for sonic academy synthwave etc. Best of luck.

    Peace!

Unfortunately there is only the one Underdog and you ain't him, so no matter how many lessons you take it just won't help.

    Sorry for harshing your mellow.

I would start with the track analysis articles
    https://www.edmprod.com/category/track-breakdown/
together with their mixing related ones https://www.edmprod.com/blog/
    +
I've seen groove3 mentioned then ... everything from Adam Pollard https://www.groove3.com/search?filter=&keyword=multiplier

    hope they can help :)

ps. their podcast series also good https://www.edmprod.com/podcast/
