Two Different USB Preamps/Soundcards in Same Project

Discussion in 'Computer Hardware' started by superliquidsunshine, Feb 23, 2014.

  1. I have both the Babyface and Saffire 6usb. The Babyface is the soundcard that runs the show but I have been missing the more mellow tone on some things with the Saffire. Can I plug in the Saffire and use a preamp from it and not freak out my computer or FL Studio. I thought that I would ask before I did something awful. My assumption is that it will be just fine.
Thanks for the taking the time to answer.

I don't use fl studio, but I am not sure what you are asking; I'm guessing it is a matter of routing, and that is done in asio control panel and fl studio I/O control panel...

if you mean switching to the saffire to record and then switching back to the babyface then yes. you can do this no problem. but if you want to use them at the same time, then no.

You need to clear up on what you are asking; i don't think franknitty69 knows what you mean, nor do I know what he means...

Actually I think that ASIO4all would technically act as a middleman and let you use both at the same time, but yeah there's no reason to. You can use them interchangeably on the same project, just match up your sample rate...

  7. Sorry for any confusion. The Babyface is my interface and all my sound is routed through here . However, I would like to at times use a preamp from the Saffire for a different tone on guitars or background vocals. So back to the question, will FL Studio give me the option to use one of the outputs of the Saffire without the Saffire being the the main soundcard? Lampwikk might have the answer, but anyone else want to pipe in?

in fl studio if you are using the babyface, then you cannot use any of the saffire's inputs without choosing it as your audio interface. you can however, switch to the saffire, record and then switch back to the babyface.

i use native drivers (motu, rme and uad) but i guess if you really wanted to you could use asio4all with both the babyface and the saffire enabled. you would lose the features and performance of the rme and saffire drivers tho.

once again it's much easier to just switch to the saffire in fl studio.

You can plug as mush as you can of Soundcards, but Daws can only work with One Soundcard at time, because each Soundcard have their special/modified Asio driver, to have the best performance.

even when using Asio4all 2, he will detect all of the soundcard connected to your Computer including the basic integrated Soundcard sush as Realtek,Sis... but only one will work, anyway check for your self, and hope you get what you want :)

Why not simply connect the output, possibly SPDIF, from Saffire to Babyface input and use just Babyface but now you could use both preamps? I think Saffire can work in a standalone mode as preamp only. ;)

Like, I use my TC Konnekt 48 in standalone mode, just as a preamp [but I do have it connected to another computer to control its mixer, FX and routing, as needed], so I have its ADAT outputs connected to my main audio card which is RME HDSP 9652. It works awesome. So it's not necessary to have two ASIO drivers installed at the same time at all. Just use it as a preamp.

Hi the Saffire hasn't spdif or adat... if it hasn't a stand alone mode I see the thing so complicated..

I think Saffire should be able to work as a preamp only. Just connect the +4dB line outs to the Babyface +4dB line ins and see. That should actually simplify things greatly.

  13. Cool, simple is good, very good indeed.

  14. I will let you'all know how this transpires till the next as I gotta crash after a longass day.
