You can get away with tuning up on an electric because the string tension won't destroy the integrity of the body because it's basically a big slab of wood that the bridge is screwd into, and even if it's chambered or semi-hollow still is screwed down into some chunk. On the other hand, I would NEVER tune up all the strings on any steel string acoustic guitar because acoustic guitars are mostly built as lightly as they can be and always on the verge of the top collapsing. The bridge is glued on and there is just a thin piece of extra wood called a bridge plate under the bridge (with holes for the pins to hold the string ball ends) to add a little bit of mass for support. In fact, acoustic bodies are held together by glue, the top if it is solid even composed of two matched pieces of wood glued together with the seam running up the center. I built a nylon string guitar last winter and the top came out to about 2.9 mm at it's thickest, fanning out to about 2.1 mm at points to the edge of the body. I was amazed that a tiny seam glued together wouldn't just break down under the tension. It's mind blowing.

The vast majority of alternate tunings call for strings to be tuned lower and for good reason as stated above. In time every acoustic guitar will need a neck reset, that is, taking off the neck and sanding down the heel to change the angle so that once again the strings in relation to the fretboard are near enough to play, as well as the intonation being as good as it can be (it's never totally perfect but can be very close). The guitar is literally collapsing in on itself over time and that angle must be dealt with.

I play in alternate tunings (mostly in regular tuning though) and one of them is DADAAD where the 3rd string which is normally a G is tuned up a whole step to A, but because of tuning down both E strings a whole step to D and so lowering the overall tension on the neck, I feel that it's OK for short times, and even then I won't do it to my more expensive instruments (a Martin D-15M isn't exactly cheap though but it is my sacrificial lamb for the sake of art, lol).

About tuning up all your strings, as former 1st lady Nancy Reagan prophetically once said...Just don't do it!

Two string guitars = the future.
Tune them to whatever interval you like.
Even an idiot can play them. Me.

I'll do just that. I've not yet used that. It's in DADGAD right now.

I have one acoustic guitar tuned to some weird open G-major-sus-dim-sharp-seven-hundred-flat-two-billion-nine chord with the string order completely randomized (as in the lower string is actually two octaves higher than the next and the one after that is lower by two intervals etc.)

It sounds AMAZING when I strum the open strings. The moment I start fretting notes, it's a 50/50 chance between "hmm that sounds quite interesting" and "OMG SOMEONE PLEASE AMPUTATE MY EARDRUMS".

So I let it hang on the wall facing my monitors, so every time I mute them I can hear the angelic chord resonate for a couple of seconds.

    CHANGED. MY. LIFE.

Huh, never occurred to me to try tuning higher than standard, might give it a go on a guitar with no floating tail. Otherwise it'll be a pain to keep in tune I guess.

I usually keep one in some sort of open tuning, DADGAD is my fave because it's dead easy to tune to and dicking about with it is just relaxing. I've sometimes tried the various wacky tunings Sonic Youth got up to, but I guess you need to be Sonic Youth to make anything out of them... http://www.sonicyouth.com/mustang/tab/tuning.html

yeah strings are a thing, it takes a while to figure out what you like and they can be expensive when you buy one set, but once you know what you like you can buy them by the dozen and the price drops like 50% a pair and you've always got spares on hand.

if you like Treble on the electroacoustic you can try the GHS white alloy

they sound nice, and last a long time i use them for around a year, they also come in lighter gauges these are 11

another thing you can try on that guitar is nylon strings if you have a string through bridge.Nylon are much mellower and work well with piezo pickups, course if you've got a magnetic pickup their useless...

Yeah, this guitar is a play thing, not real expensive, matter of fact the exact opposite. The neck is very nice, its maple, but its absolutely flat and doesn't get any relief even with the truss rod loose, so i figured try some heavy strings and tune them up and see if the neck gives a little forward bow. I've got a spare neck in case things go wrong...

its fender thinline tele knockoff, if i can get the neck to behave just a scooch more, I want to drop in a piezo under the ashtray bridge and see if there's any magic there to be mined.

It's possible dude. I did it on my classic guitar few months ago. It worked only for first and second string.
They hangs like a clothesline. But it worked!
The fun is also when you change the first and second string into thin metal one. Guitar will sound like a sitar
Also there is fun when you stick piezo mic into classic guitar and plug it into amp. Instant Shoegaze :hillbilly:

Listen to "The Big Money" by Rush - Lifeson used that tuning for the full song. And lots of harmonics in the solo!
