I think all computers were beige back then because everybody smoked so they would instantly match your walls. Never used trackers, but was using midi orchestrator which magically became Digital Orchestrator Pro. That program would do as many digital tracks under windows 3.1 as your 386 with 4 Megabytes RAM could handle without puking. The latest version of ProTools at the time boasted "16 TOTAL digital tracks", and their MIDI sequencer really sucked. A couple years down the road, I archived all that ORC file digital goodness by running it through my Gadget Labs Wave 8/24 straight into my Sony BetaMax before going analog into my big-ass Tascam board complete with wall sized MS-16 1" tape monster and it's office chair sized wired 'remote' and thinking, "How could it get any better than this?".

Milkytracker also deserves a shoutout, it's like a modernized FastTracker 2. Also Schism Tracker which is a modern implementation of Impulse Tracker, although the interface is just as daunting. Personally I've always been a fan of "Keygen Music" as I called it back then. It just has a very distinctive sound that's unlike everything else. I tried making tracks like myself in MilkyTracker a while ago but with mediocre results. In the end the interface just turned me off. It's not exactly greatest visual feedback to look at a bunch of rows of letters and numbers that represent your notes. I much rather click and drag notes into a piano roll. But I see why some people swear by it, it makes you compose differently. But unfortunately my brain isn't made for it.
