Ok, so I adjusted the attack, decay, sustain, and release and everything sounds really choppy. Why don't these synth vsts sound smooth like acoustic vsts?

    Here are some harmonic ideas.

This is done with a synth pad in nexus with default settings. It sounds really hazy with one note overlapping the next note.

This is the same exact melody and harmony but with violins from finale smartmusic. It sounds much more clear and on beat than the synth.

Any tips on how to improve the quality of the sound in the first link and how to improve the rhythm to make it sound like the second link? Thanks in advance.

Did you tried to tweak also the stuff on the "mix" page on the Nexus interface?

    Try adjusting the reverb/delay decay.

    Lower the release.
Shorten the MIDI notes of the pattern?
Reduce the amount of reverb and delay.

Yep, sounds like the AMP Envelope needs understanding.

Here`s a video from Youtube, there are plenty of others if this one doesn`t float ya boat.

    Fundamentals! :)
Learn ADSR (attack, decay, sustain, release). Learn reverbs.

Nexus2 has the reverb enabled by default on most preset. you should disable delay and reverb most off time.
