Depends. Someone who knows his craft will make a better mix ITB than some half assed producer with quality analog gear.
Sound is more than just harmonics, its life, its energy, its everything.
I do care if its digital or analog because i can hear it and feel it, also from all these plugins nebuala and acqua are at the top and not just because of the sonic properties, but because mixing with them is faster and easier vs regular algo plugins.

but I agree his desk sounded much better

I'm not here to escalate things although i can be a stubborn bitch sometimes heheh. The thing is, if you know how analog sounds and have recorded/mixed/produced on 2" inch open reel and a good analog desk, you are bound to always seek that sound. It is inevitable because it doesn't get any better than that. And with digital and plugs you will always try to simulate or get close to THAT ANALOG sound -period. That is if one can tell the difference of course. Though undoubtedly common sense implies, if a person cannot tell the difference, he/she has nothing to do in the audio biz in the first place...
So surely you can do more with plugs. The absolute "audiosex" truth though should read, HAVE to do more with plugs.
    Greets :)

Lets fast forward another 20 years when the kids are listening to music jacked right into their cybernetically enhanced neural transceivers. Will we have cloud modules that try to replicate the digital sound of the 00's. So we can listen to music with our ears like our parents did?
Sry, I just watched Ghost in the shell......

True, but I find oftentimes that restricting your choices leadsto an improved mix and outcome. For example, the classic gear of yesteryear didn't choose the frequency band selector switches and knobs to be limited to certain bands for fun. It's cos that's where the sweet spot often it. I often find it's being over surgical with a mix that develops into eventual muddiness. That's why I tend to stick to plugins that emulate classic gear or have restricted options and limitation to work within. That's just my way of working though and it might be better for others.

Mate you've given me an idea of what to change my name to on 25th December.

Chris. Chris Moose. I know I know, I can hear the groans, and see the tumbleweed fly past.

All that beautiful vintage gear and they gotta go and stick that ugly modern bling-caster in front of it. :deep_facepalm:

Roland JV-880 (untouchable warm strings amongst other dope presets, piano is even a killer)
Roland JV-1080 (loaded with any of the vintage or analog cards is diamond)
Oberheim Matrix 1000 (yes i'll take yours if you don't want it since it's obsolete)
S3000xl - (i'm currently using two, try to touch my drums, you get cut!)

Since i started using Nebula (the right way), i lost hardware envy on the mixing side.
Mechanical reverbs (plates, springs),consoles, tapes and Ownhammer cabs are REALLY amazing.

Now i need to leave hardware synth/guitar... envy

So... a sampler, which is basically a stripped down computer with inferior converters and romplers (which I actually have sitting in a box in the basement) are not obsolete?
Maybe your drums are so tight because you have perfected your workflow over the last 20 years? Would be pretty sad if you'd be doing it for this amount of time and still sound like shit, wouldn't it?
