    Part II

    Chord progressions .

In part I, we covered the major and minor cadences
To the chords in our key.
Also diatonic cycle of fourths , and 7th chords cycle of fourths.
We covered tonic resolving to the fourth degree.
Next we have the IV minor progression.

    Cmaj7, Fmin6 ,Cmaj
    Cmaj7,Fminmaj,Cmaj
    Cmaj, Fmin7,Bb7,Cmaj

For the Fmin6 and Fminmaj we use F melodic minor scale(borrowing from C minor)
    For the Fmin7,Bb7
We use D# /Eb major scale.
    ( Turned into cadence)

    IVminor progressions
    ( Borrowing from types C minor )C Nat,Harmon,melodic minor

    Fminor
    Bb7 backdoor dom
    Dmin7b5
    Abmaj7
    Dbmaj7

    ...

Next up we have Diminished chords

    Cmaj7,C#dim7,Dmin7

This dim7 chord is acting as a dominant chord.

    A7 is AC#EG
    C#DIM7 is C#EGA# ( rootless A7b9)
You can build a dim7 chord on the leading tone before any chord to create a V7 dominant function .

    Say Amin7
    G#dim7,Amin7
    G#dim7 is G#BDF ( rootless E7b9)
    E7 ( V7 of Amin7) is EG#BD. F note is flat9th

Back to our progression ( in C major)

    Cmaj7, C#dim7,Dmin7

This is using the dim7 as a dominant function.
( Use the harmonic scale of chord you resolving to while playing on this Dom function dim7 chord)

Let's see using a dim7 chord used as a subdominant function.

    Cmaj7,Eb/D# dim7, Dmin7

The D#dim7 is resolving down to Dmin7
( Use E harmonic minor scale in this dim7 chord)

Then we have the #IV progressions

    Cmajor, Fmaj7, F#Dim7, Cmajor

    Also
    Fmaj7 Bmin7b5 E7b9 Fmaj7

    Also
    Emin7,D#dim7, Dmin7,G7,Cmaj

    F#min7b5,Fmin7,Emin7,D#dim7,Dmin7,G7,Cmaj

That is not making use of theory, that simply makes you guessing.

well if u use all the white notes it just means you are in C major or A minor ..you have access to the diatonic harmony......
if you use the black notes you have a 5 note pentatonic scale......

I have read this topic and others from MMJ2017 and there is little content to support the title of the thread. These are not secrets and they are not hard to find. I am also amused that Sir Jack Spratsky is almost certainly another account held by MMJ2017. It is so funny when he has a conversation with himself. I was informed that this site had some good educational materials to help me move away from sight reading and onto improvising but if this is the best advice from the most qualified person, I should follow the suggestions by better informed people on another post.

Unless Mr MMJ2017 can play the Chopin Etudes better than me I don't think he knows more about music theory than I have been taught for the last 14 years.

wow now this is the real trip through the wormhole.....listen trolls...this is gold...you dont even have to dig "theory" just check this out with your ears.......home and hosed...thnx MMJ more please[/QUOTE]

Didn't anyone notice that Sir Jack writes in the identical manner as MMJ2017? They are so busy complimenting each other! Then he gives himself an award.
I came here for ideas on moving away from strict rules. Some of you guys have been helpful so thanks. But I guess there's no method to finding originality. Nobody can teach me that. I haven't found anything here. Maybe I'll find it and write a book.

  10. Amusing Music vs. Meaningful Music

If you mean using all notes in meaningful ways, so you probably make meaningful music, but the other way around likely would result in amusing music or not. Your music can have both qualities, just one or none of them.

Meaningful music can be amusing or not or vice versa. It depends on lots of parameters from your knowledge to the final listeners.

    You're sending me your love?

This isn't Tinder or do you send your love to all the guys here? And you're 66. About 40 years too old for me.
I doubt that sounding like Louis Armstrong would make me original. Although a girl sounding like Satchmo would be novel.

  14. Formal knowledge is mostly all about studying previous composers' practices and their do's and don'ts to remain unchanged in their invented styles.

Thank you for the very well stated put down of my playing and knowledge. Also it is good to know that studying the masters during thousands and thousands of gruelling hours practice until my hands and fingers ached and cramped up, to be able to play their works counts for little.
This is not a good place for support. I will say farewell.

I don't know how that qualifies as anything lol

If you been taught music theory 14 years ,
You probably know music theory as good as most people who know it well.
Keep in mind the category I been presenting is context of tonal music .
There are several languages which build out from there though.
    Tonal language
    Modal language
    Polytonal language
    Atonal lAnguage
    Microtonal language
Maybe some of the others are the place for you to dig in deeper?
