Why is it so hard to get the bass right in your mixes? Learn all about mixing low end in the excellent, epic tutorial by Dan Worrall.

Someone posted this in the chat too. Watched the full thing.. very informative (surprise, surprise). I definitely learned some stuff and feel like it already has helped me mix low end better.

Yup, great video. Especially like that part about EQing to remove frequencies before saturation and then putting another EQ after it to bring back those frequencies. Apparently a common technique known as "Andrew Shep's Pultec Trick", and interestingly supposedly also the approach that one of the most popular new plugin releases on sister site right now is based on. What a coincidence.

Pre and post EQ is a trick used in guitar world : pre EQ lower bass to clean bass saturation mud
    Post EQ bass higher

But most ppl don't know it, because pre EQ is a filter cap inside their overdrive pedal, and post EQ bass boost is integrated into their Dual Rectifier

The OG trick mentionned by Scheps using this Pultec Cut/boost approach is using both Pultec in series and insert a compressor in between them in an aux channel.

You boost HF and cut LF, then the bright signal goes into the compressor which will react more to them but the result will sound more harmonicly pleasant to our ears. You can use an opto compressor which has a slow-ish attack to keep more of the body/transient but it's all up to the content of your mix.
After adjusting comp settings, you then boost LF and cut HF to add back some low-mid presence.

Blending the aux send level within the mix makes it interesting instantly.

i learned something at the end.

What he call "brain bass" is called "missing octave" too.
    It is centuries old.
A trick already in church organs, by activating higher octaves harmonics instead of a single lower one.

It is used by plugins like Waves MaxxBass.
