We have a multitude of processors out there that make use of Crossovers to divide our sound. I trust my ears a lot and observe that the Lin Phase Multiband meets the demand. Among others we have Pathwork, MB-7 , FAB Filter, X6 (this one not lin phase, but 6-band Linkwitz-Riley crossover) , MultuDynamics 7Linkwitz-Riley Crossovers. Please share your experience, since a got phasing issues with most of them. Also here goes a nice note from RANE, writing about Linkwitz-Riley crossover and it's contraparts

Depends on the use. For me, in the case of multiband compression, the Hybrid crossover in Ozone Dynamics (it's equivalent is the Dynamic Phase in Pro-MB) is the best option. Can't stand the preringing of linear phase filters.

For separating bands in a static manner, I try not to do it unless is REALLY necessary. When I do, I try an analog crossover with gentle slope (6-12) and I tweak a bit the crossover points to be as transparent as possible for the given audio signal

It sounds crazy, but in some masterings, I've been using LinMB in the very first stage to separate the audio into 3 or 4 bands and after that, I apply whatever I think is necessary. I've been getting good results, especially when using the Pi da sound radix in another bus. MD-7 (6dB slope
) sounds natural as LinMB but I need to do further tests

    interesting thread
I am not a big fan of multiband compression, but I use the Waves Lin Phase on the master buss with a very light effect, to put that final pumping touch if needed: I am curious, how come you had phase issues with that tool? Maybe you push it hard compressing/expanding and with bands separation?

I use it in a basic way with 1-2 dB attenuation, so I think I am pretty safe

this is very very interesting, which tools are you using for your bands splits? And on which kind of sounds?

I am lately trying to experiment with parallel EQ/compression/widening for bass/808, which I know it's a very dangerous sport lol

I know that experienced mixing engineers do it all the time

For example, I am lately making a parallel of my 808, highpassing it with a tool from the UAD Pultec collection, the Filter HLF-3C, at 250 Hz, and after that I apply the processing I need. I leave unfiltered the main 808 track, and I gonna get good results

Only Waves LinMB don't give me phase issues. And I am going hard even on compression and expansion. MOst of times compression on the subs with slow attack (it warms the subs), a bit of EXpnasion on Lows (to give life to bass and kick transients)....every time it's the 1st stage, sending a equal balanced signal to X instances of Lin MB soloign all and remixing again to another BUS

yeah thanks, thats a more complex use than what I do eheheh

"low attack for warming the sub" you mean slow attack and fast release?

"expansion" you meant "positive threshold"? thanks : )

Upward expanders boost the level of an audio signal above the threshold, making loud sounds even louder. This extends the dynamic range of the audio signal.

Pro-MB - this one has adjustable slopes. Now that you ask me for specific sounds, I don't remember using crossovers in any project this year so far. But in the past most likely I'd been using a crossover on sounds that contain low end.

I forgot to mention this NUGEN plugin, which is very in handy in certain situations, I am starting to experiment with this one as well, I do think that it shouldnt bring phase issues most of the times, Nugen is a bunch of great developers eheheh

    what do you think?
