Create it yourself, and counter the message that you are trying to prove.

Tbh there's 0 reason to depend on slate, there's tons of good alternatives in the market. That being said, that's their business model from the get-go, it's like renting a car and dealing with all the expenses that comes with it. Some people like it and can afford it but for the most part it's a dumb business model and one that I would never invest a penny on.

lol... slate is actually a nice guy. or at least was when i knew him many years ago. before he had even started the company. super chill, laid back, always a great host at parties etc.

Though, if you took a foto of my dog Marley 20 minutes ago he would have been asleep. One can't assume from a single snapshot in time the overall behavior of a pooch...although Marley does sleep about 20 hours a day now that he'll be turning 16, so nevermind and just forget what I said!

Don't blame the company, software companies are forced by international governments to collect tax on their behalf, although $50 seems high, like 25% tax? Slate is now owned by Audiotonix a venture capitol firm that owns SSL, Allen & Heath, Digico, Harrison, Sonible, Digigrid & more. I owned a lot of early Slate FG plugins but haven't bought anything since they started the subscription model, after which they started selling a lot of non FG designed plugins and stopped having sales, to force you into a subscription. I prefer to own because international exchange rates change & I' not paying for plugins I don't want, I"m not paying full retail for a plugin in todays market.
