How much Spotify is extended in the world? How much people use it now a days? Comparing with Soundcloud and Youtube?

I'm from Italy and let's say more or less half of mu friend use it to listen to music. But the others?

ATM Spotify has around 50 Millions of paying subscribers.
    There's a wikipedia article on this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spotify

    Statistics for 2017: https://www.statista.com/statistics/244995/number-of-paying-spotify-subscribers/

In the US alone the user base - paid and nonpaid - member accounts is around 100 millions.

Youtube has much more users, but they not so bound to the service as spotify users, I think.

Pros for spotify: a huge paying user base, embedded search, on- and offline music
Cons: Smaller user base, smaller company, business experts say spotify may fail because of business model (losses from the beginning and no good chances of a change).

i use spotify free here and blocked ads - all on the desktop app. but most of the time im listen to the mp3s i have with me.

well spotify is a nice thing, but i wouldnt use it only. mainly because you have such a huge choice to listen to music, which left me with playing, but instead searching ... :D

think i have now around 750GB of music maybe a few years worth of music :D

Spotify seems as good as ubiquitous - I submit my music to it because of the potential for anyone in the world to hear it without having to pay to do so, and I don't have to pay to create that opportunity. I just accept that I'll be paid next-to-nothing for the privilege.

What I would like to know is how common it might be for people to actually discover new music (music that's new to them) via Spotify – or whether they just try to listen to artists already known or familiar to them. At one of the places I work, the staff take turns playing music via Spotify to be heard in the whole establishment, but they either select music by bands they have liked for years or default to playlists that they had compiled quite some time ago - with their tastes remaining in their comfortable ruts, not welcoming any adventure.

I started using it recently, I think it's a great way to find new music, but it's not really a replacement for Soundcloud, since you need to have a label to get your music there, so you won't find a lot of smaller artists or some unofficial remixes there.

So, you don't own all the rights or you don't collect all the royalties? That's the only reason you'd be paid less than you would get from physical sales or downloads. Unless of course, you know, it's due to the size of your audience and I don't think that's spotify's fault.

Most older people tend to live in the past, musically. So precreated compilations for them.
The younger users mostly try to discover new music to widen their compilations. Some functions of the desktop app e.g. Discover - "Mix of the week" will show them songs that match their musical taste based on the songs they have in their list. Another one is "Release Radar"

    So, as always, it depends.

Yes it was the same for me. But some weeks ago I bought a network connected appliance from Bose for my living room, my bedroom and my workplace. All three use spotify and so my music follows me, whereever I am. Quite appealing to me, so I don't use my huge MP3 collection as much as before. Only special recordings and some artists I won't find on spotify.

But will spotify survive? Not so sure, as they burnt a lot of $$$ the last ~10 years and that doesn't seem to change in the forseeable future.

yes the model is tweaked in the right way, as you can see it easy to block ads and like me - lots of people are doing that and we are not wanting to pay for premium, because free is good enough when you block ads. and then we have there deezer :D

if we compare it to the soundcloud and youtube this is become of the tough competitor of them. And many poples loves it much more than soundcloud and youtube.

I love streaming services because its the main source for me to learn about new artists. I tend to go the paid route for better sound resolutions, trying to find ways of getting a monthly discount. I gave up netflix for amazon prime to get vid, music, and shipping discounts for the same annual price range.

I wouldn't say they're ubiquitous. Vast majority of their users are in the USA. I can't even register with them from asia. Says "not available in your region yet." So I had to use a vpn to register and login.

Not a fan of this modern trend of everything as a service/subscription. Feels like we're headed in a direction where no one will own anything. Everything will be rented/subscription based. Even Jaguar was talking about how in the future their autonomous cars will be shared among neighborhoods therefore eliminating ownership and ironically killing human autonomy at the same time. Time will tell if they're right. I'll probably get flamed from people that think being nickled and dimed to death is a good thing, but everyone's entitled to their own opinions.

I'm just an old geezer that likes to own things I pay for.

    ....meanwhile, in 2033....

"shuddup gramps! nobody owns shit anymore ya ol' fart! You prunies need to get with the times!"

These "DRM removal programs" are fake, incorrectly state they remove any code. What these programs do is a kind of virtual cable to record the song played on your computer.
Once by mistake I left my AV receiver chosen as speaker on Spotify when started to convert some music and it started to play the song in a very fast speed and on 0 db (which made it so loud I had to jump to it to turn off the receiver), then I understood it's not DRM removal at all.
Therefore I suppose it has some loss in quality during the conversion.
