I did a cover of this song called "Close My Eyes" from the movie The Infidel. The song was never released to the public and was only played in the movie on the leading character's t.v. during a living room scene.

Anyway, for years I never found the track anywhere, so I used my "sound finding" skills and tried to re-record it. I'm not done workin' on it; did decent job matching the synth sounds :guru:

My 1/2 - assed version so far :

*08 JUL 2020 - version 2.0 uploaded. Re-recorded the vox and mixed it a bit better.

It is very well done. It's a bit stiff compared to the original which didn't quite have the modern timing lock-down.

The bass is section is off and not quite right it's a bit more fartty than growly and much more present than in the OS version.

I usually have nothing to say on these matters because I type so slow that and there is nothing wroth saying. However today I will say than I am quite impressed your 1/2 assed version is a 9 out of 10 and almost there.

Good feedback. Maybe I should fire up some hardware.

Thanks knightsurfer! I did the vocals through an SM7 into a Heritage TT73 with gain cranked. I temporarily stacked 4 vocal takes. I'm gonna redo them to try and get closer to the vibe, and I'll wind up stacking only 2. :)

Version 2.0 uploaded. Much happier with the vocals this time. Added a bit of Psychedelic Furs vibe to the vox, and mixed it a bit better.

Thanks a bunch! Billy Idol!!! :-D By the way, what the heck was that machine gun effect on Steve Stevens' guitar solo in 'Rebel Yell'? Today's trivia question.

Nicely done! Thanks for sharing it with all of us. Loved the vocals. I don't think you do sound like Billy Idol. You DO sound like Gary Page, the original singer. You do have a voice that fits this style perfectly.
Steve Steven's ray gun sound? That is an easy one.

@The Pirate thank you for your input! I'm not British, but I did some Depeche Mode-y/Covenent/VNV Nation type of stuff in the late 90s, which, that style certainly just lends to a non-existent accent manifesting like a specter (in the middle of pentagram drawn in chalk on the ground.) :hahaha:

The Lexicon PCM41 modulation knob!!!! I've been wondering about that for like 30 years (....i guess I should have googled it 15 years ago...) Go grab your free beer at the bar on that one! :drunks:

Steve Stevens knew what it was called, but the years of drug use didn't allow him to recall it in 5 seconds (i don't blame people when that happens). It's called 'Circuit Bending'.....could ya grab my beer too while you''re up there please. :drummer:

@bluerover Did you read one of the comments quoting an article from Rollin' Stones magazine? Very interesting.

"John Goodsall - lead & rythm guitars, Ric Parnell - drums, Mike Porcaro - bass, Billy Idol, vocal/piano/composer, Sylvester - keyboards"
Heavy hitters. That Porcaro family is legendary. To me, Jeff Porcaro was just an incredible solid magical drummer.

"tried recording Billy's band in NY but was dissapointed...."
Why am I not surprised at all by that info tid-bit. But, Stevens is also a bit of a beast.

"signature 'machine gun' effect in the gtr solo was achieved by beating down the neck of a Fender Strat with his knuckles.Miming to the video and live Stevens jerks the tremolo arm at that point which obviously has a pitch modulation effect & not the original percussive achieved on the record."
    ....aaaand that's fucking genius!

    You think so? Thanks.

The authentic sound of the original is really cool though! I don't know why they didn't release the song to the movie's fans.
