The guitar was over-glamorized around the time of the Beatles, Stones, et. al. The 80's made it worse. The trombone was really hot in the 40's, early 50's. Today? Not so much. Piano sales also go up and down. If you really wanted to do some studies you probably will find the rise and fall of the glockenspiel.
Fender and Gibson are going broke? Boo freaking HOO. The only ones responsible for that is them. I have an Ibanez LGB 30 that I would put head to head with an ES 175 any time and I only paid 1100 bucks new. Fenders have sucked since they were sold to CBS. But if you want a great Fender, do what everyone else is doing: buy a G&L for 1/3 the price and double the quality.
I used to hear that guitar players were a dime a dozen and we got payed accordingly....so maybe its a good thing that there are fewer of us. The good ones will still be in demand and we can get paid better now.

I've been hearing this stuff for 26 years now. All the numbers about sales from the big guitar makers and dealers are inflated due to the popularity of Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Once all the kids that were playing those game got real guitars and saw how difficult it really is, they gave up and there are no new games that are guitar based. I'm sure the guitar companies are at pre video game era sales figures, but they put a lot of capital up front to produce massive stock to continue at that pace. If guitar is, in fact, dying, good for me and other gigging musicians. It means that people with real skill will start making money again as opposed to having to compete with everyone and their mother.

 

So the guitar is less popular... so what? Rock bands are still a dime a dozen, guitar companies are releasing new guitars with ever increasing quality and technology at reduced costs, and amp sims get better and better. At best this will mean less competition and less insufferable teenage newbs. Nothing is dying.

Yes, that is true, perhaps a trend, but there are more things in play that are worrying, its the industry as a whole that is having an identity crisis, not including the software side.

 

Eek! The sky is falling. Run and tell the king. If old businesses fail, new ones will replace them that are more willing to adapt to the modern marketplace. It'll merely sort the wheat from the chaff (players and retailers).
I reckon the reason it's harder to sell stuff is because ebay and other similar websites have given people access to millions of other people willing to sell the same stuff cheaper. I agree that there are far fewer guitar heroes now. Young lads have probably just got different ways to impress girls these days. Maybe by warbling like they've been autotuned or playing video games.

I don't think it is so much the guitar. But music itself ! I'm with Tony Bennett on this. They deliberately cull genres and styles to streamline and bottleneck their marketing and audience. Get into the young peoples brains and chances are, if they're the average closed minded imbecile then you have them for life. See Take That and Boy band revivals.

Modern pop/song based music (And other big genres, including metal) seems bereft of any soul. It's so far removed from it's audience. People like Music for the lifestyle it is supposed to represent. Not that long ago it was the other way around.

Agree with this. I blame the industry for deliberately putting their audience into boxes. They've made it very difficult for artists (and audiences) to cross genre. It's an either or game rewarding closed-mindedness.

But while people write songs and other people drink alcohol there will be always be someone playing a guitar. Strong folk/acoustic scene where I live. Loads of fantastic singers, songwriters and musicians. Not brilliant for Rock and Metal though.

There are sooooo many incredible luthiers today building some of the best acoustic and electric guitars that have ever been made. Even if there aren't as many players as there were in the 60's, 70's or 1980's, there are still millions that are buying these new instruments all over the world. Below is a prime example of the amazingly luscious offerings today. They are expensive no doubt, but with new cutting precision and quality control even a bunch of under $500 guitars are pretty damn good, are intonated well and sound more than decent. Think Sigma for example.

Anyway, you acoustic guys check out my buddy Dan's two guitars, his beloved Japanese masterpiece, Sumi which he has played for the last 10 years, and because of its beauty and balance of sound, projection, playability and tone (the top of the guitar is made of 500 year old wood!), never gave a second thought of having another, and then his chance meeting with a Bob Thompson guitar which might very well have fallen out of the hands of an angel while jamming with SRV and Jimi, even more better than better, if that is actually possible, but you decide.

 

people probably buying guitars and other instruments a lot cheaper and with better warranty online
Of course businesses which relied on lack of price information will make less money now that the internet is alive

 

the most popular songs in the world for a while despacito , and wild thoughts BOTH had guitar and were not even a guitar type genre, i would say guitar is picking up popularity and spreading into areas it did not exist before.guitar has gotten more affordable than ever and millions of youtube videos show you how to master it and more and more 7 year old japan and Chinese children master the guitar everyday!

the only "death" of anything music related i can think of that is accurate is maybe the "death of polka"? or how about the "death of foxtrot"?

The e. guitar has absolutely almost disappeared in the mainstream music and guitar solos....when was the last time you have heard a guitar solo in a pop/rock radio friendly tune on the radio?
