This song reminds me of Plainsong from the album Disintegration. I'm as happy as a pig in poop right now :)

Was never a fan really, but it's always great to see any classic band doing new music! I know a lot of people will be pretty stoked

In 1981, The Cure played at the Rock Werchter Festival and were being hassled to cut their set short for Robert Palmer (Palmer's crew even threatened to cut their power). So, what do they do? Play an audaciously improvised and extended 9-minute version of "A Forest" and tell everyone to f*** off.

best version ever ,actually the only song i hearing by them

yeah im not feeling it yo, not to be a buzzkill; i just kinda wish they wouldve came back with something more fresh. apparently theyre dropping an album though, makes sense to have a nostalgia single for this type of group

cause yeah, when i first heard this, i thought it was like a Disintegration b-side; like it has that eras vibe but doesnt sound like it would make the album - and i fuck with The Cure, i have Disintegration and Kiss Me on vinyl. they should have some sort of new ideas, hopefully the album shows that, im not trying to hear a worst version of shit theyve already done personally, glad youre happy tho

(Big fan of Cure back in the day, i overplayed most of their albums to almost vinyl wear out condition, i still love the band for their amazing live sets and i do admire Smith for never letting his fans down, never selling out his art).
I sort of agree with what you describe. I think it's partly because after listening very good to the song, you 're left with something wanting from the music. Composition and arrangement-wise it is nothing groundbreaking. Smith and/or the guys don't take chances much in this song apart from an interesting, kinda distorted sound on guitar, that i never heard them play before. Some cool delayed pizzicato string snippets too. The main synth strings pad can be a bit annoying imho. The song does follow "Pictures Of You" in the sense that there's a long musical intro and vocal comes up way into the song after 2+ mins in, but it's in a darker yet melodic, slower mood, more reminiscent of early 80s "Faith" Cure and somewhat "Disintegration" era as well. Like dark but more in a pop form, restrained and not so edgy.
What i do find redeeming though, is Smith's lyrics and voice. You can tell by the subject he's frustrated generally. "This is the end of every song we sing alone" ? Now this is a very introvert special line that could only come from Robert Smith and i think Cure fans we 'll be happy, if the rest of the upcoming album keeps similar (or even better perhaps?) values.
Overall a respectable Cure comeback, it is good to hear Smith in a very good shape lyrically and vocally singing something new.
    Cheers
PS: Closing 500k views in just 22 hrs? Way to go mr.Smith. I guess maintaining touch with new and old audiences constantly gigging, has its perks.

@taskforce : i feel you. i was dating this girl last year who got tickets to see them in L.A. and invited me, i flew out and everything, so his voice sounding good wasnt as much as a surprise for me as others, it was genuinely inspiring to see older cats get it like they were - generally how i listen to music, i dont really focus too much on the lyrics when i first hear something; some stuff pops ya know; but usually i have to go back and thats after i dig something

but yo i do admire Robert still doing it at that level at his age, i hope i can do the same; and i have hope for the album taking more risk - im not like expecting them to reinvent the wheel for gothic rock and pop, i also understand how the average listener enjoys music by acts like this, it takes them back to a time and feeling: i was born in the 90s, all of my older taste comes from being a hardcore music fan and listening backwards, so i dont really get that feeling and its not as far away for me

it just sounds too familiar; but thats also something i dont like in artists at a certain point. i like seeming them push their sound and add too it in new ways, take risks like you said and be imaginative. which they did in minor ways like you said with the distorted guitar, they left that jangle poppy vibe off this; i guess none of it is really interesting to me though. usually what draws me to a lot of their work is i find it beautiful, i didnt really get that from this either, which is okay, im still rooting for the album and for them to not turn into modern Pixies

Epic performance and an expected fuck you from the regular old Robbie towards Robert Palmer. That said...

Back in the day I was asked to stage manage an Earth Day Festival at a park in Los Angeles. The city had a noise ordinance that we needed to adhere to if the promoter ever wanted to do another show in the city and not to fuck up her relationship with the Commissioner of Parks. I had everything timed out with very little margin of error for every band's coming and going from the stage with seven bands performing that afternoon. Everything was going perfectly until the sixth act. The artist had an amazing voice and fine songs and she ran in the same circle as I and we had played together in the past and I thought that we had mutual respect for each other. She knew that she had only three songs that early evening and I reminded her of that as she was heading up the steps to the stage, the headliner was on right after her and was contracted to play for an hour. I walked to the front of the stage and introduced them and then went out to watch her up front at the lip of the stage. After the third song she began introducing a fourth fucking song! I shouted up to her as well as doing the cutting throat signal as she looked me in the eye and continued anyway. I turned around and waved my hands at the fellow doing FOH and to cut the sound. He raised his eyebrows and then brought down the mains. The chick went batshit crazy and my security guys "helped her offstage". The headliner went on and did their set and we only went over by about a minute...only because of her outburst.

After screaming at me for perhaps 15 minutes at my blank uncaring mug she did an about face and stormed out of the venue. She yelled at me the next we saw each other for another bit of time and so never would I talk to her again after her horrible shenanigans!

yeah, kinda boring in my ears same same as always. Too pretty and thus boring. Only thing is the vocals as always, the music could be any rock/country band. Too many bands continue too long. I love the cure, mainly Pornography, Disintegration, Kiss me, Kiss me.

With all the Cure fans gathered here now, maybe one of you can help with my Cure Quest. I swear I remember a video for "Why Can't I Be You" back when the song came out that had the whole band squeezed into a tiny miniature room playing the song. Am I mis-remembering that, or maybe it was another song? I've searched but can't find anything like that. :dunno:

Feel you back man. I gotta say big kudos to you and all others like you, somewhat younger people, who in order to satisfy the ever lasting passion for more and diverse music dare to dig in the past, as it is the only "place where you can find buried treasures". True there are some modern great albums and bands but crate digging never failed amazing me with hidden gems.
For me it was much different with the Cure. It was Autumn '79 when a good friend of mine brought the very first Cure album and all company of neighborhood buddies sat, listened and loved the somehow unique, guitar driven, idiosyncratic and flawed but very exciting new wave punk of Smith's trio. We were already recently hooked from the Boys Don't Cry single. Back then my fav track was Fire In Cairo. Honestly, nobody of us ever expected what would happen in a relatively very short time, next year with Seventeen Seconds. That 2nd Cure LP, had the biggest impact in everyone i knew and hanged out with, including yours truly. Of course later on, we found out it was all because of Siouxsie 's influence, but then Smith pushed that sound to unimaginable proportions, hence he became an icon to such great anti-conformist artists like Trent Reznor and many more. Smith's work has undoubtedly left a mark for many generations to come. Btw, i only saw Cure once in 1985 and they fucking killed it.
PS: Even when Smith experimented with early electro pop in 1983, making "The Walk" (with Japan's producer at the time), managed to top or at least be on par with all other greats of the time like Depeche Mode and New Order, actually sounding like he played that style since forever lol. That is one fucking amazing dance track to me. Rooting for the album to be good myself too, i leave you with a blast from 40+ years away.

EDIT: Sorry for the complete re-write, i meant to have this and the previous answer in one post but accidentally erased my previous post while pasting this one. Thankfully @Zenarcist answered that question, so np.
EDIT2: I bet this pic sums a good portion of the 80s for most peeps being my peers here or near my age. Damn, one pic can tell a thousand stories...
