Indeed, a trackball saved me from repetitive strain injury.
But I prefer one where I use my thumb for the trackball.
Additionally, one of those fellows and your hand is safe.

I have the new wireless and had the oldest model... With my deseases I keep switching between trackpad, trackball and mouse, the best thing must be a touch screen to control my 58 screen... i think thats the future and soon mouse related devices will be history....

I prefer the style where the trackball is moved by the thumb, like my Logitech M570. It's also wireless

I have such a touch activated setup. Worked great until a fly took a stroll over the surface and rearranged my desktop. I wouldn't have minded so much if the little git knew something about mixing but he didn't have a clue. Worst mix evah. Much improved after I showed him some.... er.... compression.

I spent 80 bucks on one a while back.. after about 3 days I threw it in the shitcan... slower... more painfui... less accurate

    I would never buy another.

I have a 4000 dollar state of teh art PC, spent a fortune in time and money on my own custom made Oak console\desk, dual, badass IPS monitors, a 300 dollar back-lit,keyboard with keys that feel like little pillows...

and 5 dollar corded HP mouse.... which u will have to pry it from my cold.. dead.. hands.

If I had to choose a trackball I would definitely go with one with a scrollwheel. Can't live without a scrollwheel!

Or a mouse/trackball with an ALPS 100mm or 60mm motorised fader. but seriously.

It's pretty much essential for audio applications.

I play on line chess. I suspect a touch screen might suffer a little if I touch the wrong move. lol

Amen! It helped reduce my carpal tunnel syndrome to zero. I should get a newer one though. Think I've had it for 7+ years now (outer color layer worn off). Still works, but is a bit gooey.

How do you do scrolling with it? I'm thinking to give one a try, or should I go for the M570 with the wheel?

PS What gear is on the desk?

There is a Logitech software called SetPoint running in the background, where you just set up how the "small buttons" and the ball should act. There are two different scrolling settings, and both works great. (click small button, scroll with ball, click small button again to snap out of scroll-mode)

I can't say anything about the M570 because I've never tried it.

On the desk I have some sE Electronics (now Munrosonic) Egg 150 monitors, a monome 40h that I built, a UA Twin-finity preamp, RNC1773 compressor, Korg PadKontroller, Oxygen25 MIDI keyboard, RME audio interface and cheap (but nice) Ikea lights. The essentials close at reach.
