I don't like these "THE BEST" threads as there is never one.

But for personal use "THE BEST" is that handles the formats that you use, simple as that IMO. I'd be hard pressed to hear any difference between players unless some postprocessing plugins were in use, and I find it hard to believe people who find massive difference between players.

Personally I use Foobar2000 since it plays files that I want with no hassle and has easy conversion/tagging functions, but I'd have no problems with, say, VLC for this.

My vote goes to JRiver Media Center, it handles large collections of music and metadata flawlessly. It also has excellent support for playback options for the audiophiles.

I use it for its ability to search and catagorise metadata. For example I can look at a view of genre

Then break it down in to sub-genre

    upload_2021-1-15_11-22-14.png

    Then artist

    upload_2021-1-15_11-21-53.png

    Then album type
    upload_2021-1-15_11-22-42.png
and I could keep drilling down if I want.

Alternatively I could decide how albums are displayed, I could just show artist, or album, or start by year. This thing is amazing

There always is the best software for a particular task (at some moment). The problem is to find it. It means a lot of searching and testing.
Not all players are best suited for a particular format.
For mp3, by far the best decoder is MAD decoder, and so you should use it with Winamp.
For WAV and FLAC formats the best is Signalyst HQ Player Desktop. For other formats it is foobar2000 (excluding HD aac, because it doesn't support it) on par with Resonic PLayer.
As important as the choice of the player is adapting your PC environment for HQ audio reproduction. It includes procedures like manually setting up the priorities and affinities of your CPU cores and those offered by software like FULL Windows 10 Latency Reduction Pack and Fidelizer. In fact, they can improve your sound reproduction even some more than the player itself.
But keep in mind that a good choice of analogue audio gear has a much greater overall impact on sound, even greater than the DAC itself.
