Each minor name or group (maybe unknown, maybe insignificant) in this thread however hide an interesting artistic career, perhaps not as superstar but as music artisan. Often behind each of these artists there is also suffering (an artist suffers a lot: always) in the struggle to live with the daily weight of their talent. From this thread very interesting stories came out, I discovered fascinating groups and characters that I didn't even heard about: an unknown and intriguing world, made of Art

I have been wanting to play Golden Earring and The Clash since page one. These 2 songs were able to get people moving in clubs that did not even catered to the DOR crowd.

Yep, Joe Smooth was the original and it had bigger success in clubs and discos.

That doesn't hurt from time to time, but yes, Rock the Casbah and Celebration are "newbie introductory songs".
I'm digging in my crypt to search for strange and forgotten songs.

I think I have the original Tantra - Hills of Katmandu. I can conveniently bargain it for a miserable Roland VP-550 if you have it!

BTW, the Head drum set in Einstein a-go-go was actually a prototype of the SDS-V, just a bunch of board and wires, sequencend by a Roland MC8.

Hhhmmm... Perhaps not exactly what you asked (?), but fits posting since it was the first ever commercial track to include DJ scratching. A well ahead of its time electronic dance track, something that shocked jazz purists all over the world at the time since it came from jazz legend Herbie Hancock and produced by Bill Laswell. Worth mentioning also is the video clip was directed by Godley and Creme (former 10cc) accomplished musicians-turned filmographers/ directors, who beyond their musical career went on to receive numerous accolades for their video art in the 80s.
Released in 1983, sits perfectly in the "chart" here, maybe it is what you were looking for ?

Barrabas

Barrabas was a Spanish group formed in the early '70s by former Los Brincos leader Fernando Arbex. At its formation, Barrabas was a six-piece including Tito Duarte, Miguel Morales, Ricky Morales, Ignacio Egana, and Joao Vidal. (Members changed occasionally; the most significant change occurred when vocalist Jose Luis Tejada was added to the lineup.) The Madrid-based group was equally influenced by funk and psychedelic rock, and they certainly took a cue from Santana. Throughout their career, they flirted with jazz-funk and disco; a handful of singles become club favorites in several countries. Their first album, 1972's Wild Safari, spawned "Woman," their biggest hit. After a self-titled 1977 album, the group disbanded. Arbex resurrected the group in the early '80s with a slightly revamped lineup; that group released another pair of albums before finally dissolving for good.
Beware: two "compilations" released under the name Barrabas -- Grandes Exitos and Vive -- feature no original members of the group and are fraudulent.

 

One of the most successful acts of the 80s was Canadian disco band Lime. Here are three of their biggest hits.

 

@recycle someone is trying to rip you off. Tantra's records never have been hard or expensive to find. Indeed, the albums or singles sell for about $20. On the other hand, a good VP 550 will cost you at least $2500.
