TDR Kotelnikov is a wideband dynamics processor combining high fidelity dynamic range control with deep musical flexibility. As a descendant of the venerable TDR Feedback Compressor product family, Kotelnikov has directly inherited several unique features such as a proven control scheme, individual release control for peak and RMS content, an intuitive user interface, and powerful, state of the art, high-precision algorithms.

With a sonic signature best described as “stealthy”, Kotelnikov has the ability to manipulate the dynamic range by dramatic amounts, while carefully preserving the original tone, timbre and punch of a musical signal. As such, it is perfectly suited to stereo bus compression as well as other critical applications.

The “Gentleman’s Edition” (GE) adds several improvements to the standard edition’s feature set. The most obvious being an intuitive access to various equal loudness workflows, the ability to specify ratio in a frequency dependent manner, as well as a powerful sidechain high-pass filter allowing continuously variable access over slope and frequency. The Yin/Yang functions allow manipulating the harmonic pattern produced during compression, and a new “insane” quality mode increases processing fidelity even further.

Yup. Pretty cool and generous.

Incidentally, the primary differences between the Free and Gentlemen's editions:

1. Variable slope sidechain filter (use drag-n-drop to move it for example from 1.1 dB per octave to 2.5 dB/Oct and listen to the sound!
2. Frequency depended compression ratio (using alternative ratio for vocal range is my favorite trick)
3. Equal loudness makeup correction (very cool for great amount of gain reduction) and equal loudness bypass (very useful when checking stealth/invisible compression)
4. Yin/Yang harmonic coloration
5. Variable "Left<->Right" compression "focus of attention"

The GE version documentation is quite thorough.

Oh, and what's behind the name?

A note from the developers: The decision to call the new compressor “Kotelnikov” is primarily a tribute to a
person deeply involved in the most important technological developments of the 21st century. It also nicely
reflects the “no-nonsense” scientific claim of this product as well as its deep respect for sampling theorem. Last

I love their plugins and i'm really surprised with this new one as well. This guy is pure quality!

 

Tested it today on the Master Bus. It's nice for transparent compression. But also a bit on the boring side. I like stuff with a little bit character more. But for free it's a great tool to have in your arsenal. Haven't tested the Gentleman's Edition, though.

If you add character during your mixing session, the master bus should be as transparent as possible.
