    Hello,

I decided to deal with this lockdown situation by going back in time to the 80s :)

It's the first time I make music of this genre but I had a lot of fun doing it.

I made this little synthwave track a bit in the spirit of Depeche Mode.

Would love to have a singer on it so if anyone is interested let me know :)

Let me know what you guys think !

    Cheers,

For those interested, here's the gear I used

    I mostly used hardware:

    - Behringer Model D (bassline)
    - Behringer K-2: flanged panned synth
    - Behringer Crave: arpeggio
    - Behringer Deepmind 12D: the occasional pad chords
    - Arturia Microbrute: panned synth left
    - Strymon BIgSky for the reverb

On the software side of things I used:
    - TAL Juno 60: "bell" part in the chorus
    - Valhalladelay

I used samples for the drums

Really nice! But I think it's something missing between 00:00 - 00:08. It's too dry, too empty for me. I suggest to think about this first seconds. Maybe good idea is to add some quiet arp or arp blurry by reverb or some pads etc?
    Cheers :winker:

What do you use to maximize audio on the synths?

With the vocal inserted it might change your mind as the space is most likely implied for such a use.

its great track and i agree with fellow members about the track has dry sound
very little reverb on overall track will give it real 80s atmosphere (not too late to do that )
the snare needs little reverb on its own since this is 80s style track
everything else sounds nice to the ears

is there lyrics somewhere so i can try vocals on it ?
i love all 80s groups so im in with collaboration if you are intrested

It's a well-made nice sounding track. Nothing bad to say about it. However in 1989 I would have say it's completly outdated because it's more 82-84 sounding.
If you aim at a more 89 sound you should use samples more (Emulator II or III banks for Violator) and drumloops. Most of the pop bands and DM included evolved to a less synthy sound throughout the 80's decade because synthy music was not taken seriously at all and associated to low budget productions or jokes (I remember several old people laughing when listening to Rock It or Pump Up The Volume). D50 AND M1 were extremly popular and used at the end of the 80's because of their PCM technology (very short samples) you can try it.

You are correct regarding the time period being a bit off. I gotta be honest, I'm never inspired for titles. I thought "oh it sounds like the 80s" and I'm born in 1989 so that's what I called it haha, not much more thought process went into it.

For the emulator I know it was used on the terminator soundtrack, I haven't heard of the rest. I will have a look, thanks :)

I have no lyrics at the moment, I've never written lyrics so I wouldn't know where to begin :)

I have a vague idea of what melody I want for the chorus part but I still don't know for the rest. If you have some rough ideas please feel free to send whatever you think would work well and we'll take it from there

I think you might be right. A little bit of plate reverb on the snare or some sort of gated reverb might add a nice touch.

Definitely gonna experiment with it and see how it turns out. Thanks for the feedback

I'm not sure I understand your question.

All my synths are connected to my computer via a Behringer ADA8200 which is connected to my audio interface via ADAT.

I used a bit of compression on some (IK Multimedia 76 type).

If by maximize, you mean the maximizer/limiter, I used Waves L2 at the end of the chain on the master bus.

Hope that answers your question !
