I want to import a drum track and then want to build other tracks on top of that. The drum tack is setting the beat. Let's say that I don't know and don't care what the BPM of the drum track is. I want FL studio to NOT set it's own BPM onto it. How do I work in FL Studio independent of the DAW's BPM?

why would you not care what bpm the drums are?

seems a very odd way to work

ps you still need to know what bpm you want to set them at,

 

maybe u guys are over thinking this, when importing a drum track in the playlist fl studio reads the timestamps and automatically stretches it.
the way to undo this is: go to channel settings (double click the sample in the playlist) under the tab smp u find time stretching right click on the knob that is named time and choose none.

now the sample tempo is independent from the master tempo, the next step witch is advised by the people above is setting the master tempo corresponding to the drum track tempo

dude you wanna right click on the tempo, edit events and then erase the automation in the pattern, that way you will loose the tempo of the midi file and be able to set it manually in fl studio again

 

OK let's say I just recorded myself doing finger clicks, naturally, no BPMs needed, not relevant, and I just want to build on top of the finger clicks track. Won't FL determine/change the BPM as soon as I import it? I want FL to just not change anything in regards to the tempo. I think Kwissbeats came the closest to my answer so far.

 

i think if you do a right click on the time knob and click on reset in the timestretching part of the sampler window the sample should go back to it's original timing

 

Yes, I should've said, it's not a loop. Fruity "Loops" is a loop/dance-orientated DAW I know, but I have used it for years to record ambient and free-form, non-beat orientated soundscapes, in the region of 60-80BPM. Now that I'm thinking about this, shouldn't session tempo be an option in DAWs, not a default thing?

If you import a sample/loop that has a set tempo into the playlist, but you don't want to use that tempo:
Click the top left corner (the little waveform-symbol) of the sample and select "Fit to tempo". In the popup-window select "No Tempo".

Or:
Left click the sample in the step-sequencer to open its channel settings. In the section "time stretching" right click on the knob labeled "time" and select "(none)".
