Sun Ra - Astro Black (1972)




Released right before the legendary Space is the Place, Astro Black is a snapshot of where Sun Ra and his Arkestra stood in 1972. On it, we have the spacey title track that feels very much like the companion to the title track of Space is the Place, albeit a little more subdued. Then, we have the chilled out bluesy "Discipline 99," which shimmers and bops its way across the cosmos, leading to the African based rhythms of "Hidden Spheres" and the 18 minute celestial smorgasbord of "The Cosmos Fire."

Grab this stellar record, smoke yourself into the ether, grab a glass of absinthe if you're inclined and let the Arkestra take you on a limitless journey through space.

Great album!! Happy to hear oblique music here...

 

"Problem" is, once I start listening to Sun Ra I pretty much loose interest in anything else.
