.....imagine a world where cancelling subscription requires written form ticket, received at least 28 days before end of subscription renewal - you imagined easy "Cancel" button online in your naivity - no, you're not in humour section, it's what TeamViewer is doing in 2023

    :thumbsdown::bash::wtf:

imagine some of the audio companies doing that?

the obvious problem is that TV has the credit information, otherwise you could simply cancel and not bother anymore.

guess ReasonStudios learned from that as they reduced the free trial for their Reason+ to 7 days from former 30 days. Because people simply created new accounts every 30 days, but still they do not ask for credit or paypal information, not as roland or UAD for example. (you run out of verified paypals). But man these all have cancel buttons, which you use right after you started the trial.

Such a dick move, looks like TV really needs the funds, but they really not noticing how they are ruining themself with that.

You're right. It's so stupid considering their popularity I can't imagine another explanation. Perhaps a side investment they lost big money in?

@Xupito or just stupid management i think. Now TV has simply bad REP and this is unrepairable for the paying consumers.

I mean free users wont bother to use something else, but these also bring no $$$. (Even then the last time i have used it, the ads were making me nuts.)

The Problem is that TV is making most of their money from IT companies, they don't care about private Customers. By the Way the Software is Way overhyped been working many Years with it because of the company and what i can tell stay away if you can there are better Solutions and TV often gets buggy because of Updates and often Logs off your License without you doing something.

And I bet if I miss the cancelation deadline and I have my payment method changed and they can't get that next year's subscription payment they then will screw with my credit. Nah I'd have to make a little trip and set someone's Porche on fire!

    1) Pay a product cheaply but regularly
    2) Pay a lot more for a product but (mostly) own it
    3) Pay nothing but tribute to the reversing teams

    Choose 1

There is 4) Pay more for the product and own it :)

Nothing less is acceptable for me. Just choose the right product.

Of course, the problem is when there's no choice. e.g. monopoly of some kind, but generally there are always options, you just have to investigate a little.

...or perhaps identify a (mostly) open source alternative?:

    https://www.tightvnc.com/

It's not quite as sophisticated as the commercial competition, but it's core functionaility works great and it's easy/straightforward to set up. I've used it for remote windows/linux desktop logins for years now and it's never given me any problems whatsoever.

My bank has an option to create as many virtual credit cards as I want it, so usually when I'm doing 'free trials' that asks for my credit card, I just create some random card and delete it later or just block in the app.

I get the irony lol. But being the most used remote control soft for windows, especially for inexperienced users on the controlled side ... it's no surprise.
Last time I used it was a looong time ago. Like (A)DSL times. Things have changed completely.

I had some so-so experiences with some services myself. The last was the missing "pay off remaining" button on Splice.. also, one has to be veeery careful surfing Splice's page since they are very quick on the trigger charging for something with the payment method set.

Anyway, in the above case (where he knew in advance, he'd been charged) he should be able to block the payment like
    - if paying with Paypal, just delete the card(s) from the Paypal account
    - if paying with credit card, change the method of payment to Paypal with zero balance or..
    - put a limit to the credit card (e.g. I have to approve every cc transaction above certain limit with bank's 2FA app..)
    - use virtual credit card (I hope every bank has this option), or at least a pre-paid one
    etc..

Not saying their practice is acceptable in any way. You still have to "fight for your right", which is sad..
Oh, and he is doing it for a client and that makes it even more difficult.

Welcome in our modern World
In Germany this is - and even worse scenarios (banking, insurance) - are common pratice, even today.
Furthermore until recently: When you sign up for a cell phone plan, the basic term is two years. If you do not cancel the contract by letter (no mail, no SMS...) at least one month (not 30 days!) before it expires, it is extended by a full 12 months.

And guess what! Teamviewer is a German Company!

Regarding the video in the OP: Teamviewer's behavior is not even close to "borderline illegal". Rather, the behavior of the video maker was borderline idiotic.

In times where we are constantly being fleeced, an informed conclusion of contracts (at least reading the fine print) should actually be the standard behaviour.
Furthermore, one must be careful with foreign countries companies because most of the time
the companies make their place of business the place of jurisdiction. Then the law of the country in which the company is located applies.
To peddle one's own stupidity like the maker of the video belongs in the humor section.
