Streaky Deep dive Mix course

Discussion in 'Education' started by Vincent Price, Sep 5, 2023.

  1. Hello

I am going through Streaky's deep dive mixing course and I am on the parts about drums...so far he has talked about stems only and not mentioned anything about MIDI. Is this how it is going to be throughout the whole course, or will he talk about MIDI tracks too?

He talks of DAW templates, but yet again only mentions about stems, in terms of Audio. Do this apply to MIDI too or not?

Am I wasting my time with this?

    Thanks

You already downloaded nearly 10 gig of it, you might as well watch it. skip through parts if they get boring. he is a bit dry. It's a mixing course, so it being all from stems isn't a giant surprise.

There are a pretty limited amount of courses like these which are based in Logic, when compared with Ableton (for edm anyway). You will definitely learn new things every time you watch a good course. Logic is a very deep DAW and there are 5 different ways to do almost anything.

Check out his Fabfilter Pro-Q3 and Pro-MB presets. He is definitely not some youtuber and you will learn some things. If you can find 2 or 3 new tips and tricks per gig you downloaded, it's never a waste. I haven't made time to watch it all yet, but i will.

if there is something more specific you are trying to learn in Logic, I can probably recommend you some to check out. I have not seen that many bad ones, unlike what i can say for youtube.

    why do you need midi?
its not advertised as a straight production course or is it?
i would be expecting mixing, bussing, compression eq etc from him.

    to quote:
This Deep Dive mixing course takes you through all the processes of mixing from start to finish
whilst showing you the same systems and processes that
pro mix engineers use daily to achieve outstanding results

there are better Production courses available
there got to be some producer you like that has a tutorial/howto out

what do you like? genre/style etc.

MIDI instruments create audio, which you have to mix, and the mixing course is about mixing audio. Not sure what you're after?!

Unless you are using some plugins which accept incoming midi program changes and such; any mixing course should always be close to 100% about audio. And most of those should be using imported Stems. They aren't made for users who do 100% of everything. It would bulk up the course for someone who just wants Mixing content and instruction. "Production" courses should usually contain "Mixing" content, but "Mixing" courses should not contain Production.

the "well-rounded" Production courses will often contain a few end chapters about Mixing and Mastering. They are always very short and there just to get your "Example project" through those stages of the process to show you the processes involved within the specific DAW. Mixing and Mastering are both very extensive subjects, and even though almost all of them may promise to be "the only one you need to whatever"; they never are. Not a single one.

If you are using Logic and want more basic track production ones, the Faderpro Nicky Romero one is pretty good. For other Logic vids, check out some of the ASK Video ones with Olav Basoski. (they may be called MacProVideo in their titles). The Logic books by David Nahmani are well worth having a copy around, but you only need one. The only differences between them are due to Logic new versions and updates in them.

I am taking his mastering course at the moment, pretty informative.
I can see why it's pure audio because he's a Pro tools guy right, but you can apply the information to midi stuff surely.

(I've just seen how much the course costs, too and I am hoping you didn't fork out for it xD)

What does it matter if the drums are in MIDI or bounced to audio, it's the same process of mixing, you are watching mixing course...

the course is using Logic Pro. If your project is still containing stuff other than stems, you do File -> Bounce-> And Replace All Tracks. It will ask you to create a copy of the project, or you can just do that first. The project will be automatically loaded with all the rendered stems. 50 channels to full stem 5 minute long project will take 15-30 minutes to render and will need about 5-6gb internal ssd space. (just to ballpark it)

It's a difference because if there is still Midi, it's your own production. No-one is going to send you their project full of Midi files. It's not a very good idea to be sending your entire projects to someone like that anyway. They could even "borrow" your work. Also, they probably will not have all the same plugins and presets as you. So stems are an accepted standard for that when mixing clients' work. A course this guy charges 1000$ for (lol! btw), is not likely aimed at someone mixing their own songs.

The "industry standard" (hate these words) is to provide to the mixing engineer audio renders of all the instruments in the project. This is called multi-track.

The mixing engineer will provide the stereo mix and, optional, renders of the main groups: drums, melodic instruments, background vocals, main vocals. These are called stems

Streaky has a lot of sins but talking on audio (not midi) material totally makes sense

I know all that and don't question why people send stems to mixing engineers, but still, It's mixing course and it can be applied to both bounced or drums still in MIDI, he can still learn something from it, don't know why does that matter to him the slightest, it's not production tutorial.

i know, i was adding to your point and what i had already posted. it's more standard, and also maybe makes the course more useful to people not using Logic. the only real difference someone may notice would be settings on side-chained compressor to the tune of a ~5ms difference.

The drums are the first sections, but it should be pretty obvious it will be stems for the entire course.

    WTF is a "Steaky" anyway

  15. Hmm, well the most I got out of that was organisational skills in terms of organising tracks etc. Glad I didn't pay for the course
