I have decided to suspend the release of new N·Ai libraries.
Sales have dropped to the point where they no longer cover basic running costs – and frankly, I'm tired of seeing my work, along with that of friends and colleagues like TimP and Cupwise, shared without respect just days after release.

If things change – if the respect for independent creators returns – I still have new unedited libraries ready.

Until then, I’ve put together a small spring update for those who still believe in this work. It’s my way of saying thank you for staying."

you seem to see things quite distorted, I mean, not every shared copy is a 100% customer; I tried some of the shared libs in here and I must say I stayed with the ones I already bought, and I assure that if I spot something great you have my money ...we could argue all day and I get the frustration, but in here most of them are hobbits, like me, not one cent from music, but here am I, I bought like 10 libs till now, they where shared already here, but I don't mind, I like what I'm doing and I support whichever way I can ... you did not loose much, that is for sure.

I believe the main reason for the uptick in nebula interest is because R2R has been on hiatus for almost a year now. The amount of stuff getting released to the scene has gone way down, and the content being released is a joke to say the least. The nebula stuff has been the only constant this entire time which has any sort of quality tied to it. However, since nebula is somewhat obtuse in its install and implementation only the truly daring and persistent of users will ever really pursue and use it with any sort of regularity. Many try to get running only to fail or dislike the end result if they actually do get it running.

He's acting like the sudden downloads of his libs by the people who primarily ONLY download cracked plugins, were all RIGHT on the edge of buying all his shit.

Spoken like a true hobbyist. FYI the setups once made become instant plugins, very fast to use. They're only cumbersome if you're not using a professional level current machine, like any plugin really.

Catalog size? Most developers in this niche don't sell just one library; many have dozens. Some who are really in love with the process have accumulated numerous products over the years. Digital products have a peculiar economic property, you pay the production cost once, but the product can continue selling indefinitely. The older the product, the better; the more vintage it sounds, the more desirable. Imagine a developer with 50+ libraries in their catalog. Suppose each one sells a modest 20 copies per year at $40. That gives 50*20*$40=$40,000 in annual revenue. If each library originally cost around $500 to create, the total development cost for the entire catalog would have been about $25,000. After a relatively small number of sales, that initial investment is already recovered. Everything beyond that point becomes largely margin, aside from minimal distribution and support costs. Some libraries barely sell, while a few popular ones carry most of the revenue, which is normal in digital marketplaces. A handful of well-liked products can easily pull the weight of the entire catalog. Developers (or rather, samplers) often (over)emphasize that a product has been sold "for years," as if that alone indicates how hard it was to produce. Once a library exists, it can continue generating income for many years, with very little or no additional work. A developer with dozens of libraries selling for years and making profit over time does not need to fear warez, especially if a supportive community of like-minded people is willing to reward the developer for unmatched satisfaction. A modest number of buyers per unit is enough to cover production costs, and everything beyond that point is profit? The romantic sob story sounds (vintage) nice and can be tearjerking at times, but simple math can perhaps paint a somewhat different picture.

Of course i don't know the full story, only what I have heard from the developers, but from what I have heard, they spend a lot of time on these releases. Weeks or months. Cleaning, optimizing the samples, and programming Nebulas behavior. Tim P, Alex, and Cupwise have all recently raised the bar of what Nebula is capable of in the last few months through experimentation and pushing the engine to its limits. That doesnt happen from a passive, quick sample and release approach.

Agree its logic that doesnt really make sense. I understand his frustration and empathize with getting your work distributed for free, but the assumption that sales are down because of cracks is a stretch. I told him as much in an email, hopefully he will listen and think about things from the perspective of a user of his products.

Did he ever really complain when it was just one here, one there? Probably not. But it has been a deluge of this stuff being released recently.

You see this a lot on sister site, where someone releases one plugin or whatever; and people start commenting with "Thanks! (and let me sneak a request in here because we expect!!! every single plugin from this company now). It's rude enough to the releaser, never mind the guy seeing his whole catalog show up all at one time.
