This is definitely nothing new. Long before there was teh interwebs there were these things called "record companies" run by heartless greedy pricks much like the guys that run Spotify. As Dr. Hunter S.Thompson said years ago:

i sometimes wonder what people expect to receive for 10k streams of their title. that you can make a living from it with family, house, and sports car?

when your song is played on german TV in a saturday evening show you get at a maximum around 150 euro per minute - but this is with 3 to 10 million listeners.

atm people upload more than 100k new titles per day to streaming services. in 2025 spotify alone expects to hit the 50 million titles per year barrier. so if you upload one song to them, your market share is 0.00000002%

or imagine spotify would keep nothing for themselves and pay out everything. then you had 30% more than now, for example 1,30 USD instead of 1 USD. isn´t it?

 

Spotify is garbage. I don't use it, except in very rare cases where my band is traveling for tour and I'll jump into a jam playlist with our bass player, so I can add songs for the car ride. Other than that, I buy my music directly from the bands via physical format like CDs or via bandcamp, then put the files on my phone. I really wish the rest of the band didn't want to put our music on spotify and would just stick to bandcamp, cause I really don't want them profiting from us, even if it's only a few cents.

 

I watched a majority of this, and it was interesting. Isn't what he is talking about sort of weaponization against someone specific? What I mean is that, is anyone doing this to just random artists/bands/etc for anything besides meanness, spite, revenge, or whatever else? It doesn't seem like getting peoples' music taken down would be a scheme for them to profit from. It's more of an attack than a financial scam of some kind.

 

the opposite is true, when people released media they made more money than they do today.

everyone i know who releases media still makes money from it.

it would be sufficient not to upload to spotify. if nobody would use streaming, streaming companies would not exist and you could still sell CDs and mp3s.

it is idiodic to sign contracts and then complain about the situation you have caused yourself. that applies to major label deals as well as streaming platforms, to employment contracts as well as politicians you voted for.
