The first video in the series features Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails discussing their creative process and their use of effects in live performances.
It’s ultimately promo, so it covers how NIN uses the SoundToys plug-ins Echoboy and Decapitator on their latest album, Hesitation Marks. But the discussion wanders far beyond that and does offer insight into how Reznor, Atticus Ross and NIN approached making their new album.

In part two of Process, the new video series by Soundtoys, Trent Reznor, keyboardist Alessandro Cortini, guitarist Robin Finck and drummer Ilan Rubin share some behind the scenes info about the use of effects in live performances and the ways they interact with Soundtoys plug-ins Echoboy, FilterFreak, and Decapitator on stage.

    Sountoys... uh

180$ for a FX plugin is fucking expensive.

I guess is because they have to include the Hardware dongle and the license fee they need to pay to PACE to use their technology.

Otherwise this plugin would cost no more than 100$.

That's what they achieve with dongles. Making the product more expensive and less customer friendly.

Sideshowbob you brilliant bastard. Thank you so much man, really looking forward to watching this. And yes Soundtoys make some excellent plug-ins though quite expensive. I would say better to get the bundle for $500, annoying to buy everything separate because the price is comparatively much higher and chances are they will be some of your favorite tools. Luckily they are doing the soft licenser dealie on their new products but the price hasn't seemed to drop because they still have to pay the overlords, uh I mean PACE. And then there's companies like iZotope that I am sure make a ton of money on their plug-ins and aren't using that crap though there are pirated versions of their stuff all over. Some people just can't deal with change...and then again some can.

    Made me chuckle.

Who don`t love Sound Toys? :dunno:

Tis indeed such a shame they gotta mess around with the "PACE overlords" and code time bombs etc though. :snuffy:

    I tested Soundtoys.
I loved Decapitator. And i realized ALL their other plugins use an output saturation.

And guess what ? It is that section giving them that Soundtoys/Decapitator sound.
Take a non-Soundtoys plug, put a Decapitator at subtle setting or another Soundtoy effect with only output section (everything else disabled) and your non-Soundtoys plug will sound like any Soundtoys plug

So to me, and at that price, the amazing Decapitator is the only plug you need to buy to get that "Soundtoys sound".
I know, i'm extremist. But to me, all their plugs apart saturation/distortion ones (Decapitator/Devillok...i don't like Radiator) are just regular/usual plugs with a good saturation, giving them their "beefed up" sound.

As distortion lover, of course Reznor love soundtoys especially Decapitator ;) And probably Ohmicide too.

Reznor also likes iZotope Trash, or liked at the time, as far as I know. It's mostly up to Atticus, anyway, when it comes to computers. Reznor likes knobs and boxes. I can tell you one thing that I think Reznor would absolutely agree with: there's no distortion like real analog distortion. So many things can be emulated rather close, but real analog distortion still sounds the best. This is why even these days I would always recommend that your outboard equipment includes, aside from a good quality mic/inst preamp, at least one analog processor of dynamic kind for resampling through it, tinkering with it, or just having fun with it, to be able to achieve that really pleasing and nice analog/warm sound without any digital artefacts.

It doesn't need to have oversampling option in order to get rid of [some] aliasing... :bleh: Because real analog equipment doesn't alias at all.

btw. this is good. Can't wait to see the film: http://www.npr.org/2014/09/25/350948108/first-listen-trent-reznor-atticus-ross-gone-girl-motion-picture-soundtrack
