A bit of old school funky soul to fill in a cold Australian afternoon

Any thoughts on the mix are welcome. I pulled this back a bit to get some dynamics, but it may have lost a bit of body.

My thoughts on the mix are: you absolute bastard.
And dang! the lovely lady got range, bruh! @3:37; Mariah!
Definitely got dynamics/space in the mix. Want to hear more of the upper freqs of that 'nasty' clav line though, although it works as is.
Loving the drum programming. After 2 listens, can't help thinking it may be more complimentary to the drums to use an acoustic kick though, or just eq off some of the lower low end maybe. In which case, then you could get away with a few off-beat/ghost kicks (16th based) added to that pattern.
But I'm being picky. Because I like the track.
And you only asked for mix thoughts! Sorry.

The acoustic kick was the bit I pulled back after the first mix. Thought it was too heavy. But I agree, some work isolating the drums and bass is needed. The track is pushing nicely, but should be tougher down below. Thanks mate for the assessment.

I think it was a good decision though to keep the kick part simple, as the bass is quite lyrical and doing a lot.
Ah. Just realised you did put a sixteen beat kick before the one! duh.
Maybe my kick thought is more about level than freq, I don't know.
It seemed apparent to me in the vocal breakdown @3:11 that the kick was too 'there' in some way. But that's just me.
Aww mate. What am I talking about? It sounds great, truly.

edit: Ah! Is it a clav in the middle and a bari off to the left, playing the same part?
    It's fonky, whatever it be!

Mix sounds fantastic. I also thought maybe it could use a little more body, but after listening a while you appreciate the space and dynamics, especially in the denser parts.

This one made me instantaneously [IMG] and [IMG].

Didn't know you could soo high.

Seriously, the snare might benefit from a bit more round/wodden sound, the hh could be a tiny bit louder (max 1dB) and maybe have some more shiny high freqs.

    All other the things:

pretty much everything but the snare sounds very well indeed.
Sounds too metallic like some Addictive Drums 1 Presets

I think I've fixed all the issues noted here and by others and with your help and fresh ears, I think I've improved the original.
Also of note: exported the finished mix and imported it into Mixbus and used Acustica Audio Ultramarine 4 for final master.

Thanks KungPao. I am really amazed that you can think you've gotten every bit of energy from a track and then you forget about the rules and push harder and you can reach another level. You never stop learning. That's the marvel of music.

Nooo, you crushed the baby with your marine!

Think you gone and wrecked everything that was so great about the original there. The great "funky band feel" from the oriignal mix is gone now...

    Get some sleep and repent.

I think the main issues now are the overcompressed bd, the whole mix is too loud and the sn still isn't that funky.
I'd prefer a loudness somewhere in the middle between the first and second version here.
But the new organ sound is fantastic.

You're obviously a mix guru like No Avenger, I'm not disputing. Mix1 was clean and classic. Mix 2 for me just felt like I worked my way from the back of the venue to stage front where the funk flows fierce. Is it the hard transients from the compression that throws it off for you ?

Appreciate the kind words, man - even without hearing the devastation, just look at that soundcloud waveform, it's offensive to my spirit what happened to the great mix from before where you can clearly see dynamic range. Soulful funk is ofc from before the era of smashed soundcloud sausage waveforms, so it in particular really doesn't sound right (in my opinion) when pushed that much to be loud. I really think @notsoloud just got carried away with the new compressor toy and will wake up with fresh ears and then recoil from the monster he created the day prior.

That's what I was aiming for this time. Being on stage playing with the band. It's like a live mix.....not a studio mix. Don't think of it as better or worse, it's a different thing altogether....it took its own shape from the energy of the playing.
