some synths like Vital let you draw the LFO shape you want

does that mean you can do exactly what an ADS does with an LFO except the R? (ADS i mean from ADSR) i am not sure if R would be able to be controlled with LFO in this instance

In Vital, when you change an LFO's mode to 'Loop Hold', you get an LFO with Release. Everything left of the phase slider is the LFO, everything right of the LFO's phase slider is the Release portion.

If you want ASR, set the LFO mode to 'Sustain Envelope'. Everything left of the phase slider is the A/S Envelope, everything right of the phase slider is the Release portion.

 

when LFO can do the above (i.e the ADSR functions)...does the ADSR section become obsolete in this case? everything can be done with LFO?

I can't think of anything you can't do with the Vital LFOs off the top of my head, so I guess you could say so. Probably more convenient / less mental overhead keeping LFOs separate though.
