Ok, so I took some members' advice and got myself vengeance sound samples. But, I didn't have a good understanding of what sampling is. So, it turns out sampling is just melodies other people have created and you layer them sequence them etc. I got started off composing classical music. So, what I want is some sound libraries that are not samples. I want to compose every note and pitch by myself from theory. You know those east west quantum leap sound libraries like symphonic orchestra gold or hollywood strings? I need those kind of sound libraries except it's for making trance, happy hardcore, gabber, and edm music in general etc. I don't want prerecorded melodies. I just need sounds that plays in the pitch that I wrote for them. Any recommendations guys? Thanks in advance.

Sampling doesn't have to be about prerecorded melodies because you can also utilize a sample of one note and make your own melodies. Also those libraries you mentioned are all sampled instruments so it's not sampling that's the problem. I suggest you watch some tutorials on Kontakt.

Thanks, about omnisphere, I was actually recommended to get vengeance because omnisphere does not come with good drum patches. Are the other sound libraries you recommended come with drum patches fit for trance, hardcore, and edm. Also I forgot to mention, I want to be able to control tempo as well, whether making it play at 90 bpm or 220 bpm. Do these programs you recommend me have teh ability to control bpm? Thanks in advance.

Kontakt is exactly what you're looking for. It's packed full of every sound you can imagine. Komplete is also quite outstanding. They're both made by Native Instruments and pretty much cover every sound and instrument you can imagine, and you control them with a keyboard or midi controller so they're perfect. Then you need some software synths. Sylenth 1 would be my one and only recommendation from my years of experience producing edm, it's amazing and it's all you need alongside what I mentioned above. Then you need a software sequencer or digital audio workstation (DAW) so that you can actually lay down your compositions, arrange them, mix them, master them, change pitch, cut and slice etc...My top recommendation for you to get started would be a software called Mixcraft, its pretty great and very easy to use. The in a few years IF you grow out of it, check out Logic Pro and Ableton Live.

Get a few good sample packs for your kick and percussion sounds and maybe some sound fx and you've got yourself everything you need.

Thanks, is there any way to adjust the bpm, I compose all my music inside a notation software called finale 2012. I don't use a keyboard or midi controller. I do not layer audio files, since when you compose on a notation software, the process is a little different. I would write all the notes, melody, and rhythm on a staff of sheet music and the computer would play it back to me via VST through midi. Another concern is bpm of the music, if I want to play every pitch faster or slower or in a specific speed is it possible? I notice the samples in vengeance play at a specific bpm and you can't speed it up or slow it down. Thanks in advance.

Hey Jonathan, yes you can speed up the bpm and control the pitch of pretty much all of your midi notes in any good sequencer software such as the many mentioned before

    OP-

First, learn what a DAW is and what you can do with it.. First do research.. It takes time and effort..

That's what you need to do most imo..

Man, you said that somebody recommended you Vengeance Packs because Omnisphere wouldn't come with good drums patches, so you named also this topic that you're confused about what sampling is, mentioning that you don't like ready-made melodies, but i'm sure that when that guy recommended you Vengeance packs, he was exclusively thinking about the drums side of the whole Vangeance products, but you also found the melodies loops which Vengeance got plenty of it, so you thought that Vengeance would also work as a virtual instrument when actually don't. The melodies loops are for references or for lazy djs/producers, but you can mainly use the drums/percussion/fx side of the whole vengeance products. So don't confuse yourself up mate, i'm sure he meant about the drums samples in vengeance packs, which you get everything you need for dance/edm music.

If you want also big instruments that you can play with you midi keyb. then you can get alot of 3rd. party Kontakt libraries from different companies like Spitfire Audio, 8dio, Komplete libraries, ProjectSAM, Ilya Efimov, etc. (these for realistic type of instruments) and for synths, if you don't wanna mess up with synthesis, then you can use the Nexus Rompler (which you can play it on your midi keyb., don't think about ready-made melodies again). Also if you want a native softsynth with good presets so you can do the "inverse engineering" studying great presets in a synth to be able to understand something, then get Sylenth1 and 3rd. party presets from labels like Vandalism or Freshly Squeezed Samples. Or also Reveal Sound Spire is great (already have great edm factory presets) but also you can get the EDM Essentials presets pack for it as well. It's up to you mate :mates: .

taken from the Finale user manual

    VST

Steinberg's Virtual Studio Technology (VST) is an interface for integrating software audio synthesizer plug-ins such as Finale's included ARIA Player for Finale with Garritan sounds. Finale supports all VST instrument (VSTi) plug-ins. VST and similar technologies use Digital Signal Processing to simulate traditional recording studio hardware with software. Thousands of plug-ins exist, both commercial and freeware.

You can assign instruments included in VST plug-ins to Finale channels using the VST Banks & Effects dialog box.

To specify the locations that Finale should search for plug-ins, use the Manage VST Plug-in Directories dialog box.

So yes, you can use any VSTi in Finale, which also means you can create your own drum beats with Finale as well :wow:

    Remember to read the Manual

That's cool, I thought they might have VST support but wasn't sure because I don't use that app. Again underscores the importance of reading the documentation for the products that you use.

I think maybe NOW we are getting to what you were trying to ask in the first place Jonathon, you just didn`t know how or what to ask for!

It really does seem like you NEED to get right back to basics, which, considering your classical training must be hard to hear. I`ve no doubt whatsoever you would thoroughly shame me with musical theory, which gives you the kind of head start that a lot of EDM producers can only ever dream of!

As has been stated above, you really owe it to yourself to check out a new platform. You currently use Finale which is NOT really gonna help you in your quest for Trance beats. You are gonna have to learn a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) more suited to the job at hand. Herein lies dangerous ground. There are some amazing DAWs out there and each has it`s own pro`s and con`s, and users that would defend with their lives the reputation of THEIR chosen DAW!

I use Abelton Live as I find it to be the most immediate path from idea to sound. It really is an audio playground that once you "get" how it works gives great results.

Maybe check out some Youtube videos of Ableton Live 9, Cubase, Reaper, etc and see which tickles your fancy. You want freedom of BPM? No problem, most DAW`s today have a logarithm for dealing with stretching audio. Also, if you are using MIDI, there is pretty much NO restriction in the time domain.

I hope you manage to get yourself on the right road Brother, the EDM world could do with more classically trained musicians, plus, I LOVES a bit of nice piano on top of a groove.

    Best of luck. :mates:

    +1

As Pilzy said, but if you really want to create edm stuff in Finale then you can, you could be the first here, so why the heck not?, read the user manual to get Kontakt / Sylenth / etc loaded up and have a go. I think it would be really interesting to hear the results. The only downside is when coming to master your song, you will definitely need to do that in a DAW.
EDM use a lot of eq, compression and limiting for the final master to really bring the best out of the song, but if you just want to create, rather than produce then it's not really an issue. :mates:

    +1 SirSilly!

Some of the BEST musical ideas and genres have originated from people working outside of the norm and experimenting.

Thank you everyone, The reason I like to use finale is because of the way the VST is set up. When you put down a note of an instrument, it will play it back to you in the exact pitch and duration precisely based on your instructions. You set the tempo of the song and the time signature, say like you play a note in the violin or piano or what ever instrument, whether it's a 16th note, 8th note, quarter note, half note or whole note, as long as the rhythm is correct, the timing of every note will ALWAYS be 100 percent accurate. It will NEVER overlap or go off beat. Say like you are at a tempo of 150 bpm with a 4/4 time signature and each whole note equals one beat and you want the drum beats to be played in quarter notes. Now, I don't know how many milliseconds equals a quarter note under a 150 bpm and 4/4 time signature setting, but in finale all I have do is put down the tempo and time signature setting and I put in the quarter note and finale determines it for me. Adjusting wave lengths and frequencies inside a DAW for pitch and note duration just seems like more work than necessary. Can you give me the exact name for nexus rompler? so I can make sure I get the right product thanks. Also the funny thing is my favorite genre of music is actually heavy metal but I like all music. I am actually filmmaker and I do music on the side as a hobby. I got into composing classical music by accident when I had to take elective course on music theory while I was studying acting during my time at a university.
