I've downloaded several files from the sister site that need a password to unrar. I tried every password I can think of without success. Is there a default password that is used for this?

 

Check the post of the item you are going to download. The password is always given there. I've never had a problem finding the password!

Can you give us an example, including the full name, so we can check. I've never needed a password before.

Sorry I can't be bothered to download 4Gb to test this but some of the really old stuff use to use the web address as a password.

Back when it was a .info or .com or .org

The idea was to cut down on people reposting links in other places.

I just downloaded the files and they extracted with no password needed.

check the .nfo or RAR/7z archive comments. it's there.. you have to look sharp.

use winrar extract to here, that is all never a problem unless it is a rar or zip from some other site that actually is password protected.

 

There is only command line version of "winrar" for Macs. The most common Mac equivalent is probably Keka. If an archive has an actual problem like reporting it has been corrupted; The Unarchiver will usually get it open anyway. We have Better Zip, and some people swear by that one too. Jdownloader 2 has a nice password feature where you can add any of the passwords you encounter on these sites to a list it uses to "crack" any archives it downloads.

This video about Logic is 9 hours! The description shows the topics the guy covers, and it is a very big comprehensive overview. Those videos will usually skim over most subjects, not be in-depth about stuff you will use, and cover a whole lot of stuff you won't. Which sections those are will depend on the user.
