archive.org was breached in October 2024, with over 30 million accounts compromised. Email addresses and encrypted passwords were stolen, but the biggest impact was loss of trust in the security of the site. I tried looking at what the site was built with (builtwith.com) but they have them on their "don't trust this" list.

Do I trust the security of the site? No

Here's an example of how wonderful it can be to still get something that's no longer available.
The company AlgoMusik hasn't existed for years. https://archive.org/details/algomusic_20190825

Simply click the RAR button and you can download all 6 plugins for free, quickly and legally!

Folks, it's a goddamn public archive where every random person can upload anything with minimal oversight, of course it doesn't deserve blind trust. How'd the adage go... trust but verify.

Say I get a book of tasty food recipes from a century ago, and a recipe has listed arsenic as one of it's ingredients, am I going to make it? Fuck no.

So in regards to potential malware vectors (that is, software), do I trust that the copy of Arboretum System's Hyperprism (remember that? it's still good shit) I downloaded is actually said piece of software? Yes. Am I still going to scan it? Fuck yes.

    Common sense, sheesh.

Anna's Archive, Z-Library, Library Genesis or Mobilism if you're looking for books specifically.

There are two formats to download: pdf and epub. But .lcpl files are downloaded. There is a description on the website: "In order to access your downloaded book you will need LCP-compliant software such as Thorium Reader on your device."

PS. The book I would like to read and for my collection is MIDI for Musicians by Craig Anderton.

Don't know why it would ask for a donation, nothing like that ever showed up here.

I use the archive a lot for getting previous versions of installers or links for something that was free but requires payment now.

Get Thorium Reader, allow it through your firewall. Make an account on archive.org, go to the book's page, click "Borrow for 14 days", download the LCP from the right hand side, open the LCP file in Thorium. Open the book, enter your archive.org account's email.

    Finish reading in <14 days.

    You don't need to donate.

I've had no probs with it.... I surf straight there and search away.

I've downloaded tons of books (PDF) eg. hardware synth manuals, text-books on code programming & technical stuff, computer & electronics magazines etc.etc.

Also found a vast collection of E-MU, Roland & Akai sampler libraries.

    ... all for free ^_^

I haven't dl any software yet, probably wont need to either.

    * right-click on the file format you prefer to dl.
    * some sample discs might be a single or multi .iso - it will say how many files available to dl.

Spam. No one here its looking for an AI response. If OP wanted an AI answer they would have googled it. Get this crap outta here.

What's wrong with the response if it is exactly correct? Does every single request for spoonfeeding really need such individually tailored responses? "Does Pinocchio have wooden balls?"

That makes sense. I see AI replies here and get annoyed, but I hadn’t thought about it the way you explained it. Sorry for butting in with my stupid comment.

It really should be no surprise if you look at the advanced search page and the amount of various db queries that can be constructed.

Donation is optional, but for some books a login is required to "borrow" it. You can still use JDownloader (with your account) to download these books. Typically they are just JPEGs.

I've donated to them on several occasions. It's an extremely useful site, be it Archive.org or Wayback Machine.

I think I saw something where the uploader was asking for money once but it wasn't the website asking for a donation as a paywall. Generally, it's all free to download, and sometimes, you can only "borrow" a book for an hour or so, but it's still free although in that case it requires an account.
